hi guys, yet another newbie with a question

just a quick one, what oil is required to change the transfer case oil?

reason i ask is i have noticed all of a sudden a whoosh noise on deceleration when coming up to a junction, it happens literally in the lower rpm between about 2-1k just before i stop,

i initially checked oil and lash in the diffs but all fine, oil in the auto box is fine, its definately a transmission noise so guess i better check transfer case oil as i guess this gets left during basic servicing.

any ideas on the noise much appreciated.:)

Hi
It would help if you stated what vehicle and gearbox you have. Classic, P38, Manual, Auto, Borg Warner?
Classic Range Rovers:
Early boxes with a limited slip differential:-
Gearbox - Hypoid gear oil, viscosity SAE 80EP to API GL4
Transfer box - Hypoid gear oil, viscosity SAE 90EP to API GL4
Later boxes:- Gearbox - Multigrade engine oil, viscosity SAE 20W/50 to API SF or SG
Transfer box - Multigrade engine oil, viscosity SAE 20W/50 to API SF or SG

Bets thing to do , is to undo the filler nut on the transfer box, and smell the oil, and look what colour it is. Smell the oil in your axle. Compare.
If it smells horribly like the oil in your diffs, then it is Hypoid.
If it is reddish in colour then it is ATF.
Hope this helps

ah yes i guess it would help if i mentioned what it is... doh...

its a 95 p38 auto, someone today told me its just atf in there but want to make sure first...
