hi

there was a loud BANG from gear box area then no drive in any gears or high/low  its now recovered to my garage and jack up ready for removal, i was going to remove both gearbox and transfer box together but i think by the sound its making it must be the chain in the transfer box slipping so i will just remove the transfer box its self, has anyone got a transfer box for a diesel manual (i am told must be a manual as the out put shafts a different to a auto) can anyone confirm this?

looks like i am off the road for sometime due to work commitments

:(:( im also having probs with me own gearbox (auto) diesel,,
its started to slip between changing from 2nd to 3rd and this morning it lost drive for a few seconds a couple of times in 3rd, i had to play with throttle to get it to engage and then it was ok again, so im looking for a box now for a 1999 :(££££££

hi

sorry to here that i feel you pain in the wallet the same as mine

i cant make my mind up if i should get a re-conditioned one or cross my fingers on a second hand one

i have just had a e-mail about one £275 inc postage so at the moment it looks like i will be going for that one

hi

i did think of replacing the chain but cant find a procedure on how to change it

how easy of a job is it to change?

Once you've removed the transfer case, its a case of un-doing the flange nuts and a ring of bolts to separate the casings. OK a bit simplified but not far short

ok that helps now i have a better idear of exactly where the chain lives:D

my other question would be if the chain has worn to the point that i dont have any movement would the gears that the chain run around need replacing as well

Theres always a chance that you'll need other parts, but what will you have lost by stripping the box, nothing unless you are going to use it as an exchange unit.

Its takes a bit of time to carefully strip the box then replace the worn parts, if the parts are going to expensive then buy a S/Hand Unit.

You never know until you've tried, its all experience.

You never know it may just be a broken selector fork!!!

Have you Downloaded the Rave CD's???

i am very tempted to go for the s/hand unit then i can strip the other one down and learn how its put together and works also if i manage i can always get a chain for it

are there any drawings/diagrams of the inside?

How about a manual from The Green Oval - Home

I've got the factory book for the classic & that covers complete strip & rebuild of the BW (haven't got a scanner so can't scan it for you - sorry)

If you haven't already downloaded the Rave CD's and Microcat Parts Listings now is the time to do it.

Rave Cd's = complete workshop manuals for land/range rover near as damm it.

Microcat = complete parts listings by vehicle Vin No ( its almost like having a Land Rover parts counter at home).

The Green Oval - Downloads | Land Rover Data

Opps to late ......

Mark-Do a search for Ashcroft Transmissions in Luton/Dunstable area-First Class.

ive already contacted them john, £645.00 for a re-con.
i changed the oil and filter last week and OMG!!! the oil was as black as you can get! i had a mobile landy mechanic round mine doing the disco suspension at the time and he said it looks like the box as been overheated? ive only had the car a few months now and im thinking its down to the fog lights? ive read on here that diesels dont usually have them as the g-box cooler sits on the n/s were the fog light goes, ive had a look at mine and the n/s fog light IS blocking the oil cooler to the box, you can only just see the side of it! so if its been towing summat heavy for a long distance and its not had enough air at it then im thinking this could be the cause? or am i barking up the wrong tree?

hi

i have a copy of Rave but i was looking in workshop manual for details of the inside of the transfer box, i have now found out i should have been looking in Overhaul manuals in there is details of every part of the transfer box, just what i was needing a exploded view of how it goes together

Could very well be the cause, especially if you do a fair bit of towing. My advice to people looking to fit fogs to the diesel is to go for an "A" bar and mount them on that. The majority of P38's over here are diesel cos of the lower road tax a fair few of them have fitted fog lights into the front bumper "Holes" but the mentality of the Irish tends to be "Run it till it goes pop"-maintenance aint high on their list of priorities. The transfer box is pretty straightforward and mechanical with a chain, gears, bearings and a pump. Although the oil is cooked the box isn't as delicate as the Autobox.

Gaskets/oil seals and chain drive wheels part numbers from microcat phone a main stealer (remember they do surprise you pleasantly at times) or search ebay/4x4 dealers for prices. You know the price of a chain, now fine out if its worth the time and effort.

Might be worth trying to track down a Borg Warner dealer in the UK or see if the parts are available from the states...

i have replaced the transfer box with one from a accident damaged car, also the exhaust was not worth refitting so a new middle and rear box had to be ordered

its all fitted now and back on the road:D
