Evening guys and gals,

Some of you may remember my transfer box decided to take early retirement last month and after a bit a patience and ferreting around, I've got a replacement. Now for the questions :D

The one I've bought was from a 2002 4.0 and after some reading up I think it should be a straight swap. Is this the case?

Also read that it would be worth while changing a few oil seals, can someone point me in the right direction?

I've never changed one of these before so is there anything I should look out for or be wary of?

Thanks for all your help so far, should get her back on the road before the bad weather hits :)

I've just picked it up and doesn't look in too bad condition. They guy said he's recently changed the oil before it was taken off but yes Keith, will definately change it again anyway, after what happend to the previous one I'm not taking any chances! I think I'm going to have to invest in something like thisas it's far too heavy for me to man handle. While I'm underneath I'm going to change the diff oils.

Thanks or all the advice and keep it coming :)

Maximum height 570mm.

That loos quite a good deal, though it might be worth checking if your local hire shop has such a thing.

Waste of space then. By the time you have lifted the car high enough to actually get the transfer box out from underneath it, that thing won't get near it.

+1, decent trolley jack with a big lifting pad.:)

Yep or make up a cradle to fit in the pad hole. The old 2.5 ton Epco i bought in about 1969 for £48.00 brand new which is still usable after all that time (a couple of refurbs and a little welding). Comes in handy for stuff like that. God knows how much something of the same quality would cost these days.

But a cradle takes all the excitement out of the job, two hands holding it steady and your leg operating the jack handle.:D:D

One hand steadying the box, one foot operating the jack and brew in the other hand. That way you have a spare foot for other things as they crop up. God i wish i had a spare foot. Mind you so does the missus. :D:D:D

You could have had mine, had to have 12in's off to join the Scott's Guards, every time I sat down with a kilt on, people thought I had three knees.:D:D:D

Merry christmas everyone!

Thought I'd resurrect this thread rather than creat a new one. Still haven't got around to swapping the boxes over yet but wanted to double check the oil seals to replace, these are the ones I've come up with so far:
Oil Seal Transfer Box Output Handbrake (Britpart) FTC4939 Island 4x4 - Specialists in Land Rover and Range Rover Parts and accessories for all models. UK and worldwide mail order.
Auto Gearbox Oil Seal Front RTC5102 Island 4x4 - Specialists in Land Rover and Range Rover Parts and accessories for all models. UK and worldwide mail order.
Am I missing any?
Thanks guys

God had that today, have you finished yet, have to go to M&S. Well we went eventually, spent f*ck all (result) and back home in 15 mins. WHY????? I did get my own back the other day, we went out for a drink, went to 9 pubs then I decided I liked the pint in the first one and had to go back. Sound familiar men?:D:D

I took out my l322 transfer box the other day and gravity was my friend during the removal as made a simple jig to hold it steady on the way down but what a barsteward on the way back in.

I would definitely look at one of those lifts or the Sealey TJ150E equivalent on ebay but keep in mind, as Wammers pointed out, you will most likely need to either raise and lower the car to get it underneath if you load it on the jack away from the car, put it on the jack under the car as there is more room by the tunnel or you will need to raise it higher than the maximum by supporting the TB on axle stands mid way and then putting some chocks under the transmission jack to raise again.

I had a motorcycle lift to support my transmission while the TB was out.
Another option I considered was a purpose built plate to go on to a normal jack similar to the following link

I guess the job in hand on the L322 is similar to the P38

Well, thats easy, have the first pint in the first pub, and then, umm, try the other eight boozers again just to be sure:D
