Hi Guys

went to change the seal today, popped it on the ramp and took the prop off etc

removed the flange and pulled it out, and prie dout the dust shield and got the seal out

Questions to anyone who has done this job on theirs

RAve list a seal off the flange, didnt have one of those, seal seems to be a long way down the shaft and there is a void between that and the dust shield, should the shield just be a metal ring, should the seal be that far down the shaft, sholud there be a seal on the flange

Am now having to order new handbrake shoes so it will be in bits for a couple of days while i get tehm in

Any thoughts or comments welcome

Maybe you should have read Rave before you stripped seal out. You could have measured how far the seal sits inside the flange. You will notice that a fitting tool is mentioned. The seal fits about 1/8 of an inch inside from the flange face. The dust shield then just goes over the end of the flange before refitting drive flange. Make a small offset tool out of hardwood with a 1/8 step on it then just carefully drift seal into place the required amount down from the face.

1/8 of am inch

the one i removed was probably as far in as it would go, certinly more than 1/8 inch

when i reassemble will only put it in the 1/8 inch

cheers for the tip, will restudy RAVE must have missed that bit

It does not mention any distance in Rave. But does mention a fitting tool, this tool would not be required if it fitted flush. When i did mine i measured the intrusion before i pulled the old one. From memory it was around 1/8 of an inch. Just made a stepped hardwood drift, fitted it flush then slowly went around it carefully tapping in until it was set at correct depth. If there is any wear on your flange you can of course set it to miss the wear ring if you want to. But think it has to be inset a certain distance to avoid rubbing on flange shoulder. Maybe it has been set further in to avoid a wear ring check your flange bearing surface for wear.
