I have a 110 with a 2.5 n/a engine with a 1.6 ratio transfer box. The transfer box is needing renewing and i wondered how the vehicle would perform if i fitted a 1.4 ratio transfer box. Would it generally lower engine revs and give better fuel economy, or would i find myself running out of power and end up using lower gears than before ?

If you mean raising the gearing, I would think very sluggish on acceleration.

I presume the gears would be further apart and i'd spend longer in each gear, so taking longer to get to the high gears and generally being slower. Is that how it would work ?

In principle, yes. But because 2.5 na is quite a low powered engine, and a 110 quite a heavy vehicle, you may find it is slow on pick up through the gears, and it may not pull 5th except on downhills.
2.5na should be quite an economical engine anyway.

I think i'll stick with the 1.6. Land Rover must have fitted it for a good reason. Thanks for the advice.

No worries. :)
If you want to do something of that nature, it might be better to look at some kind of overdrive. They are selectable, so you could have the extra gearing for a bit more top end down hills and running empty, but still have standard gearing for towing and heavy laden work.

I'm happy generally with how it drives, but was just curious about what difference a 1.4 box would make, having read about peoples different conversions. I'll keep the 1.6.
Thanks again.

I had a 2.5na that came from landrover with a 1.4t box and it was fine on acceleration but it struggled to go more than 50-55mph on a flat road tbh. Flat out.

It was okay. I have a 200tdi engine fitted now and it will top out at 83mph with the same t box lol
