Afternoon folks. Would a transfer box from a 300tdi Discovery fit my 110 Defender LT77 gearbox without modification?
I am looking to swap out the military 1:6 ratio that's fitted for a better cruising speed when touring :)

I believe they do, can't be certain though .. I'd wait for someone who's done it first. I did it the other way, swapped my early engine for a Disco 300Tdi and just made it fit the LT77 housing, different stud, extra hole I think, but that's t'other end!

By the way, do you want to sell the 1.6, if so how much?

Yep the 1:6 will be going up for sale chap but I am aware they are worth a pretty penny so will get back to you when it is out.
I think a friend has done what I am thinking here and a box has come up at the right money about an hour away so I may just have a punt on it.
Thanks for the reply :)

Yes, fits fine, might have to a little mod around the drum brake for something I can't remember but involves drilling and tapping a couple of holes but it's easy to do.
I've done it but it was so long ago I forget details but I do remember the tapping of threads and that it was straight forward.

I knew there was 'something' but that it was easily doable .. ;)

Is your 300Tdi tuned? And what size tyres are you running? The 1.2:1 transfer box on a stock Tdi in a 110 will be a complete slug. You'll think it's broken.

If it's tweaked, then yes it will pull the gearing, but performance will take a bit of a hammering and it'll be far less suitable for towing. But wheel size can play a big part too, if you are on 205's at about 28-29" tall or something that is 33" tall.

I am fitting a 200tdi in it not a 300 :) The engine will be left standard not tweaked in any way because it is going to be a camper/overlander conversion. I am after more of a decent cruising speed.

Yep, full loaded I suspect you might find 5th gear a struggle to use tbh. Depends on tyres, if you are on 205s you might get away with it. But a 235/85 or similar will struggle. Mildly tweaking a Tdi will transform how they go. Well worth doing.
