Took the transfer box off my old 2.5 gearbox today, it slid off loverly but I notice that the end of the gearbox output shaft is threaded.

Should there have been a nut or something on the end of the shaft? and if not why is it threaded:)

Worried something has dropped off

Thanks

Probably because the gearbox can be used on a variety of non land rover vehicles (without transfer boxes), In those cases a output flange slides onto the shaft and is secured with a nut (similar to TX box) for the UJ to bolt to.

no they use a different thread and spline on end of mainshaft

r380s dont and some lt77s had it cut off for oil feed plate fitted to rear of input gear prior to cross drilled input fix

my LT77 has a thread on the end of the shaft, oil feed plate fits on without chopping it off.

but did you fit it as lr intended as thats why they used to cut shafts ,besides cross drill gear is cheaper

As far as I am aware, although i followed directions from ashcrofts where i got the plate, and they answered some questions i had over the phone - i described what i had done and they said it was ok. I didnt have any paperwork etc from LR to follow, i just did what ashcrofts had said and emailed me.

here is my thread,

do you mind having a quick look and straightening me out if i have f*cked up lol :eek:

Dunno about cheaper I only paid a tenner for the oil plate on the advice of ashcrofts as neither of my shafts were particularly worn - they advised the oil plate would be fine.

ive seen it thats why i asked , my point was lr used to instuct cutting thread off to fit plate ,which is why you sometimes see boxes like that ,but it was rare and mostly mod as i remember

so do you think i would be worth my while chopping the threaded end off the mainshaft or leave as is? I didnt think i had done anything wrong, but advice/constructive criticism is always welcome!

I have done about 1500 miles since i fitted the plate with no weird noises or anything. I didnt have to mod it at all to fit it.

if its working its working ,how much of the oil screw spigot protruded

if you mean on the end of the mainshaft, none of the screw protruded.

If you mean the the bit sticking out the back of the oil feed plate, well i didnt measure it but at a guess about 20mm (ish)?

Once it was all assembled the threaded end of the mainshaft sat inside the spigot on the oil feed plate with about 2mm clearance around the outside. the outside of the oil feed spigot had about 3 or 4mm clearance inside the input shaft.

I didnt measure all those btw just going from memory and approximations. Ashcrofts were certain it would fit straight in and it did. If i remember correctly my LT230 is a 'D' suffix but it might have been 'B' i cant remember sorry

did you fit the big oring , theyve drilled center of screw spigot on plate out to fit over thread then as std it doesnt ,which in some ways makes working on box later easier only 300 tdi t/boxes didnt use gaskets on t/box so yours shouldnt be b suffix and input isnt b type in your pics

okay it must be D type then, i remember i was able to fit cross drilled gears if i wanted to, i jsut opted for the plate instead as my gears were in good nick.

Yes there was a bit O ring on the back of the oil feed plate, almost the same diameter as the oil feed plate itself. As for whether it was drilled or not, i have no idea, it was a take off part from ashcrofts not a new part so it may well have had the middle of the spigot milled out at some point but i dont know, it just fitted over the threaded bit. May have been modified to fit rather than cut the mainshaft on whatever vehicle it was originally fitted to, by whomever did the original work.

EDIT just found my Tbox number in another folder of photos, its 22D167606D 1.410ratio

just been having a google, this is interesting, seems to suggest there are 2 oil feed plates one for the lt77 and one for the R380 (presumably realllly early ones). The R380 one has a smaller internal diameter on the spigot as there is no threaded end on that gbox. The LT77 is larger to accomodate the threaded end on the LT box. I did not know this,as i thought that all r380s with LT230s had x-drilled gears. I have no idea if this is actually true though, i dont recall my oil plate looking like it had been drilled etc.

Oil feed disc for LT77 - wrong fit??
