Transfer box problem

New member, hello

I have an old series 1 TDi, which is great, but it jumped out of gear today whilst reversing. Now wont drive in normal high or low ratio, but will drive in diff lock.
Is this a major tranfer box problem or something simple?

Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.
 
you may have snapped a halfshaft there chap...oopppsss

Will it select low and high ie notch in just wont drive unless you engage the lock? If so I think I'm right Chap...

I will look at the half shafts first. I had this problem on an old series 2a years ago.
Is it a difficult thing diagnose and fix?
 
Thank you once again for your valued advice. I have read the link in detail and have found it very interesting. When the rear half shaft snapped on my old 88, the propshaft still spun whilst in gear. My propshaft does not spin in gear and with the handbrake off. Does this still lend itself to a problem at the rear?
Being a complete novice and not a mechanic, I am worried about taking things apart that I can't put back. So I may need a garage. Here in France they have there own opinions about everything. I need to be as informed as I can to save me having the bodyshell replaced instead or something equally stupid!
Am I alright to drive it on the road in diff-lock? I live in the arse-end of nowhere and need my wheels.

I'm really sorry if you have already answered my questions and find my further enquiry irritating, but having followed the forum for a while, you chaps seem to really know your stuff and I am genuinely grateful for your replies.
 
Sorry, I forgot to mention that the vehicle is a '92 Discovery. Hope this makes no differnce.
 
i would not recommend driving in diff lock as if it turns out to be a half shaft bust and a bit of it gets in to the diff it will get a great deal more expensive.

TRY
driving on diff lock indicates a fault at the axle or prop end.
place into gear & hand brake off and have an assistant watch both props?
which ever rotates indicates the problems end?
is that prop-shaft driving in to the diff? this confirms the prop sliding joint is ok. once the above are checked the fault is in an axle.
rears are easy to check, ring of bolts on the hub and slide out the half shaft, if ok check opersite side, if ok diff knackered.
front could be a shaft of a cv joint which means a big strip down.

Thanks for that. I did as you stated.
Put it in gear with handbrake off.
Front propshaft turns and rear does not.
This means a problem at the front then.
Not so simple to fix?
 
unfortunatly your right?. its a case of draining the oil in the diff, looking for debris. then play iny miny miyny mo, left or right, you wont know? i know on my 90 when it went bang i parted the swivel housing complete on the axle tube(6 or 8 bolts), pulled out enough to check half shaft, at the same time you can turn the hub and hold this half shaft to confirm the cv joint is ok. mechanical stresses say start with the longest half shaft?
