Defender 90 300tdi.
If i grab the end of my front propshaft where it mates with the front flange on the transfer box there is a few mm of sideways movement/play.
I get some vibration at about 35mph which is drivetrain related (road speed only related not engine speed).
WIth new shocks, polybushes, props, balanced wheels, steering damper the only thing i can put it down to is the transfer box 'play'.
My question is, is it something that's okay to put up with or should the output flange have no play whatsoever?
If the play is left as it is will it cause damage to other components?
Am i flapping about nothing?
IF i have the bearings changed how much are talking about for parts? and anyone know labour time?
Cheers.

check circlips on half shafts first, mine displayed same vibration and the circlip had come off and the whole shaft moved, new circlip and all is well.

I have just changed both of my output bearings, front and rear. i had vibration through drive train. easy job but you have to be patient when knocking in the new bearings.

bearings are many different prices, i chose to pay dealer prices for the bearing( silly i know 38 quid each) but i could have got similar for about 12 quid each.
you will also need 30mm nylock nut, felt washer and prop nuts.

i'm in Essex if its any help.:)

Just an update for anyone researching with similar problems.
Bought new bearing to replace and the old one is okay, the problem was the flange itself, worn splines, shaft okay.
It doesn't feel so rough now when driving but the vibration problem between 30-40mph is still there but not so bad, more of a noise than anything AAAAARRRRRGGHHHHH!!
More investigating to do!

The only thing it can be is the rear output from the tran box, with the front flange knackered it won't surprise me when i get the brake drum off to find the rear flange worn too, the vibration and sound just feels more to the front.

could be a worn cam in the tranny box. we have had a few probs with our TD5's at work where you get horrific wobble at around 45-55mph. Its something to do with the wearing of a cam over time. sorry for being so vague but i dont know much more than than. what mileage has your 300 done?

We replaced the gearbox last year as the old one was shot, the internals of the tran look just fine.
When i replaced the front prop the sliding joint was solid, the lack of movement could be what caused the flange to wear so quickly? The back propshaft wasn't as bad but i wonder if ti could have caused similar wear to the back output flange?
The vibration isn't that bad really just aggravating! The landy has had so much work on it it's getting smoother to drive, but then the more noticeble vibrations and noises are from components i would be none the wiser of if it was as rough a ride as the day i bought it.!
