hi everyone i am new to this site and wondered if anyone could help me please?
i have a defender 90 1991 200tdi which is my baby so the missus says ha ha.
anyway driving home the other night could hear a whining noise which soon turned into whining and grinding followed by a noise which i can only describe as something metal jumping around gearbox/transferbox!!!oh ****. so thought could be handbrake drum as i have had the juddering from that previously so on inspection i found that the hand brake drum was loose . took it all apart only to find that inside handbrake the centre nut was loose .so tightened it all up and used some locktight stuff and very happily put back together drove down farm lane slowly and sounded ok got onto road only to discover its worse f###.drove back up lane it started to bang loudly and was now limping back to barn got to slight slope and now no drive at all  so have found a transfer box for £100 but dont want to buy it if its not that anyone have any ideas please?:)

hi so today decided to take off the 1.4 ratio transfer box and investigate! undone the cover and inside all the drive gears were f#####. so have put a 1.6 transferbox on and all sorted:D how ever didnt realise how long it would actually take and neither did the missus:argue: anyway do you know if this will affect speed, mpg ect ect???
many thanks stuart

1.6 ratio means you will have a lower top end speed, thus a lower mpg as you will have higher engine revs but be going the same speed as before if not slower as you won't want to rev the backers out of it. Low range will still be the same.

ok thanks will look out for 1.4 again as it is revving fair to get to 50 so another sunday tinkering!:D thanks
stuart

ok may look into that. will it fit straight on to the gearbox? is the handbrake ect still the same? will it still tow well?

If your towing id stick with 1.4 then. Yeh they do fit right in just have to change the handbrake over and few little mods for the cable.
