I plan to replace the rear prop shaft oil seal on my transfer box but, having just taken a looksee at the transfer box, it seems to be awash with oil:

Is this oil likely to be due to something other than the rear prop shaft oil seal leaking? (I suspect the front one)

If the front prop shaft seal does need to be replaced could someone give some guidance of parts/how to do it would be appreciated.

Thanks

the drip of oil at the bottom of the transfer box dont like gear oil and there looks to mutch of it is there any think leaking around the starter motor and being blown back ??

but if it is the oil seal its easy to replace and looking at the oil around the bolts should come undone easy

I'm new to this world of car maintenance so I'm not too sure what I'd be looking for at the front of the car. There was a bit of oil up front - I took a picture whilst I was under there:

It doesn't look _too_ bad does it?

I also took this picture and I'm hoping that the oil spatter confirms the rear prop oil seal definitely has gone:

Is it possible that the oil leak is from the gearbox? Changing gear is quite a challenge these days(!!)

Any guidance much appreciated.

You need to really clean it down tbh before condeming any particular part, the transfer box is covered, so its difficult imo to see what it is.

Im with martin, the drips on the transfer box dont look like gear oil, but again difficult to tell really.

If the rear output seal goes, it fills the handbrake drum with oil, so the handbrake is crap and you get a drip from between the back plate and the drum

if the front has gone it "should" be easy to tell, but you need to clean around the flange where the front prop goes and then take it for a spin and see if it re appears from around that area.

The transfer boxes generally leak in 3 places
front or rear output seal, or from the square access panel on the bottom

Pressure wash off the oil and take it for a run then put cardboard under the box and see were the drips are in the morning etc.

That oil could be from an old leak thats been fixed or you may have a few.
