I have an oil leak which I assume to be the transfer box rear oil seal? I cleaned everything off and went for a run and on return inspection the only oil appears to be coming from inside the handbrake drum, it is then collecting in the groove between the 2 sections and dripping off the bottom. My best guess is that this is an oil seal in the rear of the transfer box, would this make sense? If so can this be replaced without removing the box? Anyone have experience or advice please?
Thanks
Jaz

Sounds typical, yes you can replace in situ after stripping away h/brake assembly.
Dig old one out with great care, and very carefully drift in the new one.

Thanks for the reply, it gives me a bit more confidence I'm not looking at a massive job anyway. Do you know if the old seal can be extracted using a slide hammer or is the best option a screwdriver and hammer?

Cheers
Chris

Lever it out gently with blunt chissel or similer, the seal is relitivley soft.
Take your time here as you dont want to score the edge of the box housing, its only alloy

Put two self tappers into the face of the seal and pull out with pliers or mole grips.
Worth getting a speedy sleeve kit - you may find that there is a groove on the shaft collar. I had a '93 RR Classic 200tdi & Lt77 [factory fitted]. that suffered an oil leak at the output at the rear of the gbox. Third time I fitted a sleeve as well. It cost about £12 but was a lot less painful than lifting the damn transfer box up and down.

Thanks for the help guys, I have the bits, new seal and new shoes, so will give it a go over the weekend.
Cheers

Just a quick update for anyone interested, when I stripped it down the seal mating surface on the output shaft was grooved and corroded. I took it down to a local engineering firm and they skimmed 8 thou off it, there was still some evidence of very slight pitting but we didn't want to risk taking the diameter down any more.
The old seal came out really easily using a small slide hammer and self tapping screw so no problem there.
All built back up now and after a short road test no sign of leaks... so touch wood!!
Thanks again for your help
