Hi guys :D

We sent a 2005 Range Rover (facelift shape) into Land Rover today for the spline recall work as it makes a loud metallic humming/rubbing (similar to a digery doo!) osilating noise when going slowly uphill.

After struggling to find the noise after attempting a hill at 30mph, I explained [again] to try it at 5mph. Sure enough they found it! Clearly not sure what 'slowly' means these days!!!

They have advised that the car does not need the spline work as it's the later shape car and this issue is not on this car as it has a different system, and the system is showing no outstanding recalls for this car - and they printed the list off of their system which does seem to confirm that - fair enough.

For reference, it's a 2006 body shape with the 6 speed box, touch screen nav etc, but still with the manual hand operated hand brake.

But we're left with the car still having the noise!

They mentioned it could be the transfer box, and that it's big money if it is. But he's going to look over the bulleteins from Land Rover tomorrow to see if it could be something else.

Any help ior advise welcome (we're trade by the way).

Also, worst case scenario what sort of money are we talking to replace the transfer box??

Many thanks!!

Lion Heart :)

A re-manufactured exchange unit from Land Rover should be just under £1400 (p/n LR008206) and a new one around £2400 (p/n IAB500280). It might be worth Googling the part number to see if you can get one cheaper elsewhere. They're pretty easy to find on eBay etc. too because the same transfer box is fitted in Discovery 3 & 4 and the Range Rover Sport as well
