Hi Guys and Girls

So on sunday whilst traveling to the sort out. On the A34 after about 40 minutes of driving started to get a whiff of heat coming from the defender a few moments later a judder through the trans followed by a a big loss of power. pulled into a lay-by and the car basically braked itself to a stop followed by plumes of smoke off the hot transfer box and what remains of it oil. appeared to have lost oil out the box.

couldn't pull away without stalling so looks as if it seized. waited a few hours for the flat bed to arrive to get a lift home.

After about 4 hours there was very little let up in movement as drove it onto the drive had to use high revs and slip clutch as it would stall and the sound of metal on metal torture and more smoke only moving it a few meters.

normal gearbox i can select forward reverse etc a appears ok.

transfer box still seized so its not just a heat issue also can't select high /lo stuck in high.

haven't had time to inspect further.

any suggestions on rebuild or at what point do you just buy new / recon unit ?

Pay £50 for a lt230 1.22:1 out of a disco and buy a spare
