L322 Trans Failsafe

Hello All

---I managed to get a fault reading of 'P1709 manufacturer control' does anyone know if that helps me isolate the problem?---

L322, Petrol 4.4 2003 V8

I wondered if any ideas I could try now?

We at getting intermittent Trans Failsafe, we change the gearbox XYZ switch the ECU and still we get the message. Sometimes a message flash and sometimes it stays on and puts the car into limp mode.

It is driving us mad and we really don't want to have to get rid of her.

Anyone with any ideas I could try now? It is difficult for me to get the Range Rover where I am.

I wonder if discounting the descent switch could help - I know this could be problematic.

I have the same issue. Not driven the car for a few weeks since. To try to resolve this I intend to check the diagnostics for any stored faults, then I'll check oil for level and condition in the gearbox and then will probably change transmission oil cooler, filter and oil and the oil cooler thermostat as the oil and filter have not been done for a while. While at it I'll probably change the engine coolant thermostat for lower temp one check cooling fan coupling for function and replace if no good and check radiator is flowing correctly.
And then I'll stop for a cup of tea before testing the car again

I wish I was capable of doing all that!

The transmission was re-built 4 years ago, with a new oil cooler (I think it was the oil cooler all a long).

What about your other ideas, do you think they are connected to the Trans Failsafe?

PS - I have my original gear switch and computer if you get to ever changing those parts

Is your battery and charging system in tip top condition?

A battery getting old and weak will throw fault messages, don’t know if it would actually put it in limp mode but possible.

Thanks for the response - new battery. Had massive warnings a few months, Range Rover Diagnostics said it was the ABS ECU, this was changed, this has stopped the multiple errors, now I just have this one.

Put it on diagnostics and look at what codes it throws up and go from there. Sadly, anything else is a bit "poke & hope".

Most likely its the gearbox neutral inhibitor. Mine plays ball for days on end and then every so often I will start her up select drive or reverse and the message appears. Turn the ignition off remove key and then start again and no problems for an hour a day or a week. There is a small module on the side of the gearbox with the wiring running up to a connecter at the back of the engine block ( looks almost like the plug on a towbar but smaller). You can get second hand for about £160 but how long does a secondhand part last !!!! or buy new for about £600. Personally I live with it and will do until it starts really messing me about.
