Trailer

I have a Land Rover SWB back end and yesterday thought instead of scrap I should build a trailer, I realise that I can't use a Rover axle due to brakes or lack of them. I will need to make a subframe for the body and a chassis what type/grade steel should I get?

just buy an old caravan and use the sub frame

No I don't want to do that, as I'd like to try and build one from scratch, just to show myself I can, but thanks for the suggestion anyhow.

If you need to ask what metal to use and don't know how to modify the brakes on the rear axle so they work properly (Think Sankey Trailer) Then I'd take Seans suggestion and work from there.

Not much use if it's got a tonne of chopped logs on board they'll fall thru the gaps between the poles. :doh:

to make a half decent trailer your going to need a few 100 quids worth of metal, then your welding consumables, axles, tow hitch, brakes, jockey wheel, electrics and a good few days to make it

if you keep your eyes open you could pickup a good used indepension one for not much more than it would cost in parts to build your own

a good load of logs can easily weight a ton, so it needs to be STRONG

a twin axle caravan can be had for 50 quid at a general auction, strip the living area off and the remains are exactly what you need

The caravan option may be considerd in time, but the Rover body was just a project I was thinking of, but I can't agree more with the amount of things needed. I used to use a LWB Rover years ago with greedy boards for the same job so yes it would need to be strong. Thanks folks for your replies.

it's a fact that you can make more money by breaking most landies and selling the components - think that's the first time i've seen someone do that to a trailer

ive got a galvanised trailor tent chassis. its got brakes jocky wheel good tyres and a spare and a 90 body sits just nice on it ! it could be yours if the price is right. i bought it to make a trailor but just dont have the time now my planning app for the workshop has been granted. i can get ya pics if ya need them.

you can also buy logs my dog has done ! dunno how they burn but they sure do stink and theres a huge pile every day !

Uh, the thought of it. As I've said I think, it is something to think about, the weather will be getting warmer so not much call for wood, thank you all.
