Dear All,

I am just after a piece of advice, I have a Land Rover Defender 90 (300TDi) which I use for road driving only and approx 10,000 miles per year (have not taken off road however I do use it for towing). I had it serviced and MOT at the same place each year.

I have been told it needs 3 new Track Rod Ends and a drop arm joint. These were only replaced exactly two years ago - is this normal?

Two years ago I had a new Track Bar, 3 Track Rod ends and Drop Arm Boot. Last year it required a new Pitman Arm and this year a Drop Arm Joint and 3 Track Rod ends.

Thank you for any advice,

Bedfsnherts

IT does sound as if its going through those parts rather quickly, i assume youve had your tracking correctly adjusted?

Oh and get yourself over to the Introduce yourself thread quick before the mob descends ;)

Thank you the_wolf,

Yes, the tracking has been adjusted each time.

Just going over to intro page now ;).

Thank you,

That's fairly often for track rod ends even for 10000 a year, they may just be lower quality ones, although drop arm boots regularly go if not fitted correctly or just out of wear

Thank you 200tdi_ayre,

I know the garage mainly uses BritParts (the parts were £16 each plus vat, labour and tracking)

I work on lots of landys, mainly farmers ones so the get some abuse, and I rarely change a track rod end especially twice in 2 years. We mainly use all makes, or bearmach stuff with some others though, more expensive but you get what you pay for. I never use any britpart part unless its supplied by the customer as the one he wants, some people never learn

Gotta agree that is silly. I drive off road on the farm almst every day and have changed one tre in 4 yrs a 20,000 miles.Garage must be fitting crap or taking the ****.
I dont use ****part on mine.

Fit genuine ones. Especially the drop arm ball joint, as that can be a bastard to change.

Cheap parts are generally a false economy, especially in a case like this where the genuine bits are not even that expensive.

Thank you Guys,

Very much appreciated :bounce: Just as I thought - it seemed very excessive. Will give them a call to find out why but before I did wanted to check on here.

Unfortunately I'm not mechanically minded, so I hope you don't mind me asking silly questions every now and again
