Started my next job on my P38 the steering track rod ends.
got it out of the hub......just. what a struggle that was.

now i cannot get the thing to unscrew from the rod. tried heating up and couple of different sprays, nothing.

dont really want to have to buy a new rod due to having low funds and also having to line the wheels up again.

anyone had this before. any advice on braking the tightness on it???

also would a 2002 steering track rod fit this car. think it would but want to be sure.

I thought the track rod end at one end was integral with the rod?

One end of track rod and one end of drag link are crimped onto rod and cannot be replaced seperatly, you have to buy the TRE complete with track rod or drag link. Only one end of each screws out for adjustment purposes.

yeh i no, crimped side is passenger side. im changing the drivers side becasue there is alot of play and its a nightmare when driving. especially on motorways. exciting tho, lol

So this is the track rod you are working on (one behind axle) not the drag link. Heat mate thats the only thing. You will need to free of both the L/H and R/H threads to do job properly and get adjuster to work. This is where the mechanics favourite number seven nozzle and 10" stillsons are usually deployed. Get it as warm as you can and put some plus gas on it. Care because plus gas is flammable. Reassemble with copperslip.

managed to get the dam thing off. heated it up and didnt really make much of a difference, but then i heated it up for about 5 minutes then sprayed wd40 and then turned it half a turn both ways a few times and it come loose. well i say loose, it still took another 30 minutes to slowly turn it out but all done now thank god, only thing is i got another one to do soon. noticed the rod with the damper on, the ball joint on there has totally split. car feels alot better but there is still that little loosness about it.
i will get onto that next time.

thanks for the help once again guys.

Yeah the solid one on the drag link is usually the one that fails first.
