hi we are playing at towing a caravan , having to learn rather fast as we have traversed across uk , down France and now into Spain with just a few minor hiccups , however yesterday we suffered loss of transmission changing power, i.e. Just bit of reving and not much else , fortunately it happened just few hundred yards away from campsite. Upon siting van I then tested at low speed to find box seems ok , without van attached of course.
Questions are this. Is it probable. That the box was cooked a little as we were in past hour up the mountains giving it bit of stick really.
Second question is this, where can I find advice on how to tow (correctly ) in other words am I causing this by using mainly drive then changing to manual where needed. I have not used low or high ratio as the handbook is pretty useless , I've never owned a Range Rover before this was purchased for towing but have got to like it. I've got lm322 td6 diesel 3 thanks in advance

Had it on road test this morning . Ragged it round the streets and it seems perfect , must have overheated

If it has done 100,000 miles or so and not had a new torque converter and gearbox it will need one shortly, specially if you are towing with it. They are a weak part of what is generally a good car.

Has done 102000 with a fantastic service history and no expense spared by looks of the invoices, that's if their not made up of course.lol anyway considering that I've tested it this morning and it was perfect , does it sound like the box overheated, cos it does suggest this in the handbook or words to that effect

Possibly but the gearboxes do not hold together to well that is a known fact. Usually the lockup clutch fails in the torque converter and the debris ruins the valve block.

what was your engine temp doing, and were you in OD/overdrive? Never tow in OD
