If I go and buy a non-running LWB landie and put it on a rented trailer, am I ok to tow it with my P38? What are the rules on weight these days?
(Always assuming the lights and stuff are OK)

Aslong as you don't exceed the P38 towing capacity (3500kg) and you have a license for such (I don't as I passed my test after 1996/7 when the new laws came in) then you'll be fine.

Towing commercially with a train weight over 3500kgs for a distance further than (I think) 50miles (or KM - can't remember the figure or unit) then you'll need a tacho fitted!

Towing for private purposes you'll be fine as long as the towed weight is under the limits of the P38 capacity.

Towing weight is the combined weight of the trailer and load. But lots tow off road stuff around all the time without a problem. :);)

I have same as saint v8 i passed in 2007. Iv a normal car licence without extra towing test Latest i can find is. that the trailer carrying capacity is calculated by the tyres if no gross plate and that the trailer max possible weight cannot exceed your towing vehicles empty weight. Or exceed 3.5 t max train weight. 1750 car empty and 1750 trailer max weight by tyres or plate is ok. 1700kg car and 1800kgs trailer is not.

Often towed landies on a flatbed, as far as I know it is completely legal if you have B+E licence.

If not, I think you need a trailer test to do that, LWB on a trailer will weigh at least 2500kg.

That's a bit vague how do you work out weight by the tyres?

Last time I looked it was trailer plus load max 750kg unbraked and 1250kg braked trailer or the max towing weight of car what ever was lowest.

Tyres have a load rating the load rating of all tyres cannot exceed your vehicles unladen weight direct.gov and theres a very detailed and simple verson on a thread on the vwt4 forum

If there isnt a plate on the trailer saying the mam then it is judged by the max load the tyres can take. if the trailer has a mam over the unladen weight of your vehicle you can get in the **** for it

Very helpful chaps, thanks. I passed all my test in 1974 so I seem to have every category under the sun which is good.
Back to bidding for a non-runner on Ebay then!
