UK readers should note that the '88 trooper is a very different beast
to more modern versions and has leaf springs at the back which are
generally better for heavy towing. However, to tow those kind of loads
without an effective trailer brake deserves sanction ;-)

Huw,

The MTPLM (maximum technical permitted laden mass) is 11000kgs.

3500kgs revenue weight
3500kgs trailer weight fitted with standard over run brakes
8500kgs trailer weight fitted with vacuum braking system restricted to
40mph
750kgs unbraked trailer weight.

It's a 1995 300 tdi Defender, ex Central Electricity Generating Board.
It was used for tugging there white elephant! a 25ft front bogie
exhibition trailer, when not used for that it was pulling pylon parts to
middle of nowhere?

Heavily modified then. Restricted driving license will apply. What
class of license do you have? Assuming that you have not had it
replated to a lower weight and that you are not breaking the law
drastically.

I have a class 1 but you can drive it on a car licence solo and towing
up to 3500kgs but it changes to c1+e when towing anything over that.
It's the same situation as the AA, they've just spent thousands on a new
fleet of IVECO spectacle lift vehicles not realising the licence
implications. Their old car licence drivers can only drive them solo, as
soon as they put a car on the back they become c1+e. Quite a few of
their drivers have been demoted to driving the VW T4's, if you notice
their use of 'A' frames has grown.

only a problem if the driver passed their test after 1997 as those who
passed a manual car test before get

B, B+E,C1, C1+E , D1, D1+E, f,k,l,np

unless they are medically restricted licence holders

and BTW the cut off for none +E towing is 750kg MAM

also i don't believe towing can change the category of the tow vehicle ,
only add the '+E ' requirement so it must be a C1 category before towing if
it's C1+E when towing

Sorry but it's the other way round. Anybody who passed their test
before 1997 are restricted 8250kgs using the c1+e, after 1997 it's
12000kgs.

AIUI after 1997 you don't get C1+E at all without taking a second
test.

'zactly

pre 1997 'freebie' C1+E = 8250 kg

post 1997 extra tests C1 +e = 12000kg

if the vehicle in question is supposeldy cat B before towing it remains cat
b when towing

even if it did change class would it really go from sub 3500 Kg TOTAL
vehicle mass to more than 8250 KG TOTAL train mass

8250-3500 =4750 kg
