Greetings Everyone!
I am looking to put add a 12s caravan socket on my 300TDi '98 Disco which already has a 12n fitted
Anyone tackled this before, am I better going for a Euro 13pin job and where do I run the flex to?
There are obviously fusing issues
Cheers in advance
Scott

The 13 pin socket it technically better, but there's no point having it if your caravan doesn't, since you'd then need to buy an adapter as well. I'm sure you can buy a kit, and spend a happy day wiring it up etc and its not too complicated. The Disco 1 already has reverse light and permanent +12V wiring connectors, in addition to the 7 pin lighting, the wires are in the right rear corner (same place as the 7 pin plug), obviously there's about 4more things to add for the 12S, including split charge relay etc.

It's not a difficult job to do adding the second socket, you need two 4 terminal relay's, and on mine I only have three wires from the rear, earth, fridge and charging, haven't bothered with the light's, if you are wiring fog light's you will need to wire so your car lights are off as not to dazzle you.
Wont help much, and good luck.

Andy. :)

Theres some stuff on here.....

Towbar Wiring: 12N, 12S, 13 Pin, Sockets " Relays

and as already mentioned there is already some of the wiring waiting for you inside the rear offside light hatch, accessed inside the vehicle. The car would have most likely come with a Rists socket that you could just plug a premade kit into.A lot of previous owners or their garages havent used the connector and you may find a lot of scotchloks in there (shudder!!!) but also a constant live with a black rubber sheath for a bullet connector and a cable for reverse. For the fridge and the split charge you can but a ready made unit that only has tiny relays inside, use a couple of 40amp ones or get a good solid kit like...

12V / 30AMP SELF SWITCHING SPLIT CHARGE RELAY KIT on eBay (end time 03-Jul-10 09:41:50 BST)

or you can spend out on a voltage sensing relay,up to you

Thanks guys for all the info, your link SHOCKER is for a company 5 miles from me so will visit them tomorrow.
Thats the weekend sorted:D

but also a constant live with a black rubber sheath for a bullet connector and a cable for reverse.

Can this perminant live be used for the 12v require for charge, or do you have to run a new 12+ from the fuse box. ie a new 4mm.

in my d1 i have a green and a purple cable from the loom with bullet connectors on.

Google "12S trailer wiring" and you'll see that terminal 2 which is +12V (battery charging) is ignition switched. The permenent +12V on the purple/brown wire is just that - permanent - ie not switched. Hence you need a split charge relay or other type of device in there. Also, its not amazingly thick, I'd not want to put too much current through it. Its also fused 20A but this also covers the radio, clock, alarm and interior lights (on a 300TDI).
