I have been told I have to use Freelander specific electrics for the towbar. At over £200 a go, this is doubling (and the rest) the cost of the towbar. Is this really what it needs?? First time getting a towbar and don't want to be duped!

yes it is what it needs, the towbar is controlled by the CJB (new name for body control unit, now called central junction box) and a module that is fitted behind the L/H C post, these have to be configured with ids to work. A bit like adding hardware to a computer, you need software for it to work. This is how its going nowadays with all these electronics that are fitted to vehicles. All lights on FL2 are controlled by the CJB via mosfets, so that the mosfets aren't overloaded, the CJB needs to be "told" that a towbar is fitted.

Range rover sport and disco3 are the same and I doubt very much that things will change back to the old way where you just connect tow electrics into the rear lights. You just can't do stuff like that anymore without risking damage to the vehicle's electrics.
