Just a quicky, I have a faily rust free top tailgate on my 88 classic, what is the accepted method of getting some sort of rust-proofing into the frame?
I thought of trying to remove a hinge screw on each side and trying to inject something into the frame before it starts to rust.

You can also remove the handle but if it were me I'd drill a hole in both sides, near the bottom, & inject either Dinitrol3125 or Waxoyl. I've had my RRC treated professionally twice over the last eight years & of course the equipment used has more pressure than you will get from an aerosol applicator, so you may have to drill more holes to get total coverage. Check the size of available rubber/plastic bungs before deciding on your drill bit size. I would apply the aforementioned advice to the lower tailgate as well because whilst replacement top 'gates are available (in either steel or alloy) bottom ones have not been for several years.

Personally I am on ally and have never looked back.

There are obvious advantages to alloy but I try to keep to the original spec. where possible, plus avoiding replacement costs & to that end cavity treatment certainly pays off. Knowing the history of my Classic there's every chance that the tail-gate is original & has survived thus far with just a bubble on each bottom corner that I've managed to keep in check with rust-converter.

Thanks for the replies guys, looks like a (yet another!) job for when the weather warms up. I will be getting a whole load of dinitrol anyway for the spring and I guess its going to be best to borrow my mates compressor to help get into all the little crooks and nannies.

Why do you need lots of dinitrol for a spring? If I were you I would spray in on the underside of the motor...
Ho Ho Ho :p:p I will wait until spring when the weather warms up a bit and then intend drowning everything I can get at in dinitrol to keep a rust free classic rust free.
If you want some free rust by the way I'll post you some bits of my 90 or disco that have dropped off during the latest pressure washing.:D

Many thanks for your kind rust offer, unfortunately I appear to have a fair amount of my own at the moment as I have 2 classics to strip In the coming months.

Good move & will turn your Classic into an investment - such a high proportion of those produced have dissolved into a pile of rust that a corrosion-free example of the breed is now a rare sight & consequently appreciating in value.
