The top speed of my 1993 defender 90 n/a diesel is around 55mph, 65 at a push - is this normal?

I'm new to the off road game but and whilst being more than impressed with the off road ability i just wanted to check that the top speed is normal

I believe the landrover to be an ex-military version and was fitted with a recon engine/gearbox approx 45 thousand miles ago, the landrover has covered only 112k miles in total

cheers

27 hits and no updates ?!?!?

if you do have a defender, please let me know if this is normal

thanks

I am not to sure of topspeed of a 90 n/a but i would expect it to be about 65ish. I had a 109 2.25 petrol ex military what could do 60 allday if i wanted too and i have heard people say it is similiar performanc? just better torque on diesel.

I now have a 110 2.5td and a 2.8td rangie.

Oh and what tyres have you got on your 90 you could get better top speed just by fitting taller tyres but you compromise set off speed!

I will ask a friend of mine and get back too you he had one untill about 18mth ago he travels up from shropshire to lakes quite a lot on motorway.

ok!

I have a 2001 90 TD5 and it will do 85-90 (as long as your wearing ear defenders) it will happily cruise at 75-80 and still return 30mpg.

Hope this helps.

Have 300 tdi disco. and it purrs...sitting at 75 ish... But just to remind you the slower you go the more people take more notice of you  ..... Landrovers are a thing of beauty to be adored by others .........;)

Wilson...

I fitted a 2.8td Izuzu in rangie which returns about 28mpg allday but i not found out top speed it will cruise at 85 no probs i not got the bottle to take it further! but reckon i can get 100mph out of it easy. A mate got his upto 110mph but his got lowered springs and antiroll bars fitted (sport kit). Mine is still pulling well at 85mph!
Compared to my 110 which has 2.5td which has no real top end speed but i can get it wheel spinning on set off!

here here beastie!!

tyres are 245/75/16 bf goodrich trac edge (which seem brilliant - why these are discontinued is another question!!!!)

i'm gonna book him (larry) into the garage to get a full service

see how that goes

thanks

I just read in a book on defenders that the top speed for a N/A 2.5D is 68mph. So i guess its about right.

I also have a N/A 2.5 90 (1986) I have fitted 265 75 16 Grizzly Claws for off roading.

Mine does'nt seem to be able to push much past 60mph to be honest.

Hi Tim,
I drive a 2 1/2 n/a diesel and find max. cruise speed about 60 so seems yours is similar to mine, I have just chanc=ged from a series 3 lightweight diesel so this one seems quite quick.
regards tim gear

I can get abt 140km/h on my Td5 D90 (02MY) without flooring the gas (well almost). She's running on 265/70/16 Bridgestone AT dueler.

Hi Tim,

I remember reading somewhere that Defender 90s had a top speed of 88mph. Remember this because I was looking up the specs when I was toying with the idea of buying one. Now I have bought one, the speedo has gone to 80mph, havnt dared push it past yet, only had it 5 days so far. Now this is on normal road tyres, no AT or MT type tyres here. Not yet at least.

I can double check the speedo calibration on my way home with my gps to see if it reads true and I will report back.

Oh BTW my Defender is a 200TDI 1991 model with 82K on the clock.

Wow love em and hate em, 115mph:eek:, must have been a windy day :D

I can only dream of going past 90mph:p

So far top speed 85mph, still need to check calibration against GPS
