My last L/R was a Series III. It had lots of failings but did have the virtue of tool stowage spaces. The P38 is hopeless in this respect.

My understanding was that one could have tiffins with Tarquin and then pop down to Tamanrasset to bail out a Simon Mann type.

Where do you keep the toolkit? There is the L/R recommended kit but it is not up the job for a latter day Ryder-Haggard. (STC8244AB TOOL KIT AND STOWAGE CASE | Discovery 2 1998-2004 | shop | www.lrseries.com | L. R. Series)

Spare-wheel well is no good. It involves removing bow-wow cage and Memsaab's portmanteau.

Where do you stow your mobile repair kit? I have a DSE and there is quite a promising space if I move the fuel filter to somewhere less space indulgent.

Ideas?

LOL, this is exactly what I though here in Japan with JAF (AA Equivalent) when I ditch my 16" spare wheel and used the place for cargo. My car is on 18" wheel, why on earth would I need a 16" spare wheel?

Well if you have the correct tyre on the 16 and the correct tyre on the 18s, the rolling radius should be the same within a few mm, so the 16 would get you out of trouble if you had a flat. Maybe JAF will fix a flat at the road side don't think AA will.

Unfortunately they are not the correct match... But JAF are really amazing (They also take care of my Motor Sport License), Flat Tire can be solved on site and if not it will cost me nothing to tow (Tow is correct?) the car to a garage.

I find the right hand recess (where satnav would go for those who have it) makes an idea location for a small tool box.

AA is probably OK but I have my doubts about the wisdom of claiming to be a 'Green Flag' member in the Libyan desert.

If you're going to be driving in Libyan desert AA would indeed not be for you. But would suggest you take something larger than a small tool kit. Somewhere to stow a rifle and several hundred rounds of ammo may also be a good idea.:D:D

Roof mounted remote controlled heavy machine gun and a supply of grenades even better:rolleyes:

Don't rub it in. If I'd known that I would end up being the only driver, I would have stuck to my guns and bought a lwb Defender County. Live and learn and I do like my DSE - a lot.

It's just such a daft vehicle. My Volvo 240 estate had far more room for lugging things around, the Series III could be tuned and timed by candlelight - even my 2CV was better for shifting 3 metre lengths of plumbing piping!
