ive got a g reg 90 td defender, i paid £850 for it, its got history with it its done 120k on the clock had recent new clutch belts changed and over bits, ive just had some weldin done to chassis and bulkhead, its gona need new tyres this year and another back door, ive been quoted to have full respray inside and out, chassis treated and wheels painted and engine steam cleaned for £500 thing is im not too sure about gearbox and engine, gears are hard to engage sometimes and make clunk noises, and engine tapps, the question im askin is do yas think its worth spendin the cash on it?

no point having shiny new paintwork if yer engine and GB is fecked, keep it orginal and spend yer money keeping it mobile - if it looks all shiny and new it'll get knicked quicker

change the GB and tranny box oil - take the cover off under the gear level and blat it with a release agent - then see if the gear change is any better

a tappy engine could just mean that the tappets need doing - that's an easy 30 minute job

if you take it to a garage they are more than likely going to suck teeth and start talking in 100s

dont worry about visuals such as paint and wheels till it's running properly

full respray inside and out plus other stuff seems weirdly cheap.
I'd forget all that and sort the grinding/tapping/knocking stuff out.

Over the last year or so I have realised that all this forum is about is grinding/tapping/knocking...thats it! (Obviously I'm lying but you get my point)try a search involving any of those words and you'll see theres plenty of help right here.

alryt, ive took it to local garage today and the guy took me out for a drive in it off road, at the side of the irwell (dont no if it was in manchester or salford haha) and he said everthins mint on it, his phrase was " your just driving it like a faggot" so think i mite get it sprayed, and yeh it is weirdly cheap its bein done by a proffesional still

Is that £500 respray including all the prep work? Seems unbelievably cheap, I payed £2500 for a 1st class paint job on an MG Midget, including sand blasting the underside, chemical stripping panels and all other prep. £500 amy be either a VERY quick (read ****e!!) blow over, or might require you to do all prep work - either way, no warantee I bet if the paint falls off!! Get some dulux and a 5 inch roller!!

Sounds like good news as far as mechs go tho, congrats (hope to join the landy ownership frat v.soon!!!)

the paint job involves preppin etc.. itl be a rough job but a good job if ya get me, reason its cheap he's a friend of a friend, and hes not got much work on, thats good thing bout salford u can find a autobody and mechanic on every street.

what did the side of the river look like? if it was dead posh then you were on the Manchester side, if it was a bit "coronation streety" then that would defo be the Salford side. HO HO HO HO! only jokin' I was born and brought up in Manchester and me mam was born and brought up in Salford.
God's country.

watch out with blow overs, the paint can come off very easily in sheets! Thats why I had a bare metal respray!! Still, seems like he is doing a comprehensive respray if he is doing inside. If you change the colour do under the bonnet too, looks crao if you dont!!!

Bare metal respraying isnt for the th efaint hearted, especally on steel. It will get surface rust within hours!!

Post a pic when its done!!

just buy a good paint and brush it its twenty years old. even a good respray wont add much value.spend the money you save on toys and playing.and you are right salford is IN manchester as you have to drive through it to get there
