hi everyone bought my first landrover about a month ago - hopefully it will tow our caravan better that our last car. i'm having a little problem with the reverse lights. i have fitted a reversing senser kit wired it up only to find there is no power to the reverse lights. with the ignition on i have checked with a volt meter at the switch in the gear box. the gear box switch is working or seams to be. the plug in to the gear box switch has power running to it . the power cuts off when the switch is pressed closed ( i have done this by hand not while it is in place in the gear box). there is power to the fuse, but nothing to the bulbs. should the lights work if the ignition is on & if so can anyone help please. thanks :rolleyes:

did your reverse lights works before you installed the camera? disconnect it put the car into reverse and turn the key to position 2 and see if they light up.

Have you any electrical experience?

hi, i found out the lights didn't work when i put the car in reverse to brake into the wires to the lights. the sencers haven't been wired up yet because there isn't a live feed to the bulbs. no i don't have any electrical experience.
 
Any obvious loose connections in the rear light housing itself??? Im assuming that you've already checked power to the reversing light at the fitting?
 
if the weather is ok tomorrow i'll try & work my way from the switch on the gear box back to the fuse & then on to the brake lights & see if i can find the brake
 
i've spent 2 - 3 hours looking at it this morning & i have found out a couple of things, firstly there are two wires going to the gearbox switch red/white which carries the power & a black wire. i assume that when reverse is selected the pin in the gear box is pushed closed. so this morning i released the plug in socket from the gear box switch & used a paper clip across the two termals to make the circuit. by doing this the power from the red/white wire stopped, so there wasn't any power at all at the switch end. if this is correct is there a relay somewhere which picks up the drop in power & then sends power to the lights to make them come on ? also trying to trase the wires through the cab, i found that the glovebox light isn't working. tested the bulb & it was fine. there is no power to the push switch - this may be a completely different issue, but i throught it may help in solving the reverse light problem. the fuse for the interier lights is fine & all the other interier lights come on.

If what you say about shorting out the wires is that you have a + 12 v when open circuit but 0 v when closed it would suggest that the switch is switching a negative. The positive you are seeing will be fed from the other side of what ever it is switching ie a relay. Try to locate relays and remove one at a time until the +12 v on you switch goes. It could be the relay at fault.
 
The gearbox has two switches, for HDC in first gear and reverse.
Does the HDC light on the dash light when it's switched on and in gear?
The switches might only control trigger voltage from the CCU.

hi,i didn't know there where two switches on the gear box i may have been testing the wrong switch. the switch on the gear box i have been testing can be got at from above on the right hand side of the engine, the hdc lights up on the dash when its switched on. if i unplug the switch again & turn on the hdc i assume it shouldn't light up if that is the switch which controls it.
 
the switch you been testing is the hdc the reverse switch will have cable color's green feed and green/ brown output:confused2:
 
thank you - how stupid do i feel now, i believe the switch is under the gearbox, so i'll have a look over the weekend when i have time to jack the front up & remove the underbelly. thanks again
 
thanks to everyone, got under the car today & with a little difficulty managed to lower the belly cover & found that the connection to the switch had been disconnected reconnected it & it worked. wow. why did land rover make it so hard to get at anything under the car
