hi, i went to look at a land rover 110 yesterday it was in very good condition for it's age 1996 with 109.000 on the clock. the only thing was when i start it up there was a whistle coming from the engine bay which stopped on while i drove it she said it was the fan belt which she said she had taken it back to the main dealer who said she was wasting her money tring to stop it. what could it be please help. also the front windscreen washer had broken of how difficult are they to replace.

if you fit a decent quality belt and ensure it's tensioned correctly it wont make odd noises, it's not quantum physics to cure it so beware and make sure it's actually the belts making the noises

broken windscreen washers are also not quantum physics to change

300 Tdi belts are renowned for squeaking/whistling. Talcum powder gives a temporary cure. Land Rover produced an alternative "Quiet" belt, but didn't recommend it for off road use, I asume it was more prone to slipping if it got wet.
 
If its a squeek were talking about then I would agree its just the 300tdi belt squeek - its just an identification marker... But if it is a squeek and not a whistle check the pipes.
