My boss is getting his RRC back after it being in the garage. It needed a fair amount of work and he's only just bought it.
Finally it's ready and the mechanic said he set the timing up. Instead of being the normal 6 deg BTDC +-1, he said it would only run at 20 deg BTDC.

Runs fine like that - any ideas? It doesn't sound like a good thing.

The previous owner said it had had an engine rebuild.

DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT TIMING, if you do why don't you share it with us, if you did you would know why I asked the question

Did he take the distributor out

I don't think the dizzy was removed completely by the garage - god only knows what the previous owner did when he rebuilt the engine.

It's a 3.5efi (an 86')

I spoke to him about it today and it's 18 degrees BTDC - seems to run fine but how the hell can it be that far out?

Best leave it there Ironhorse since I don't know you and you don't know me and it's impolite to shout in public.

After removing the distributor, if the engine is then turned the location point for the distributor has also moved, when relocating the distributor the engine must be on its timing marks before the distributor is inserted into its correct place. I have in the past found the distributor has not been correctly inserted and who ever placed the distributor in the engine has then compensated by turning the distributor to get the engine to run, it maybe this is your answer

I see what you mean - the dizzy is keyed to only fit in at a couple of points I guess. You think it's a bad thing to leave it like that? Obviously something isn't right but if it's running ok?...

a strobe light does not look at where the disie is it checks the spark in relation to the position of the crank it does not matter where the disie is there is a possibility the cam is misstimed

In order to get your position on the crank you must have the dizzy in the correct position, alter the dizzy you alter the relation to the crank

?????????? tou can put the dissie in any where you just have move your firing round to correspond and the strobe will still give you the same readingi ie when its firing inrelation to tdc no 1 pot

if hooked onto wrong plug lead it would be minimum 45 degrees out[8x45 =360]thats if its next in firing order
