Hello. Just changed my timing belt on my discovery 300tdi with no issues thanks to posts found on this forum so a big thanks for that.
However I decided to change the crank dust seal while It was apart, BIG mistake. It is the later bearing type so I fitted it so as the bearing would still spin. I rebuilt the engine and started it up but after a few seconds I had a burning rubber smell. The timing cover was really hot around the crank. So apart it comes and on inspection the dust seal has obviously got very hot. Comparing the new seal to the one removed it would appear the old seal is about 1mm narrower than the replacement or maybe I just stuffed the job up.
Has anyone changed this seal or any advice on where I have gone wrong?

Thank you

Hello,

Which part number did you use to replace it with?

Can you provide a photo for clarification?

I did not bother changing mine as it was still good. Did you change yours for a reason?

Cheers

It was replaced like for like with err7143 which is a bearing type seal but appears to have been sitting too hard against the crank timing belt sprocket and got hot...and no I had no good reason to change it apart from it was apart so clever me thougt I would, and now im in a pickle. ..lol

Maybe I should have just hit it home like a normal seal but that would stop the centre from turning and the one removed was spinning free.

Just ordered both types of seal. Will see if a normal seal will fit. If it Won't and I am unable to find any information on correct fitting I will try hitting it home and see how that goes. I will report any findings.

Yes rubber side towards crank pulley. Or atleast thats how it was removed..kind of makes sense really, Wouldn't want dust etc in

All sorted. Got new err7143 today fitted it firmly using a jubilee clip adjusted to the correct diamiter a bit of wood and my vice. Pushed it home like a normal ceank seal re built the front end and perfect.

Also got the other non bearing seal incase I couldn't get the bearing type sorted and they would happily interchange..

that maybe of help to someone else later.
