Hello,

Next task over Easter is changing my timing belt, but again, (and I know you'll all say "SEARCH") would you mind if I just asked a couple of questions to make sure that I am going at it the right way please?

1) Where can I get these "locking pins" that supposedly hold the timing cogs in place? And what do they do to lock the cogs in place (through hole in cog into engine body?)?

2) Do I really need my engine positioned in top dead centre, and what exactly is that? Also, how do I tell when I'm there?

3) Do I tension the belt by what I think is right? Ie. a tiny touch of slack, or should it be pretty hard to push in with my finger?

4) Just as long as the timing marks line up (and the cogs don't turn) everything should run A-OK?

Also wondering if there's a guide for the 12/19J or 200 tdi on LR4X4 anywhere? Been looking

1. Get the haynes manual it tells you how to make a locating pin. It locates in the starter ring when the correct piston for the timing marks is at TDC.
2. Yes, if you don't you run the risk of something moving an yer timing'll be far enough out for you to bend yer push rods.
3. No, gte the Haynes manual it tells you how to torque the tensioner up to the correct tension.
4.If you have the the locating pin an the timing marks lined up then all will be well.

Haynes manual is your best bet.
 
Dunno if you can do it on a landy, but this works on some vehicles.
Expose the belt and loosen off the tension a bit (not too much).
Carefully cut the old belt in half longways, using a stanley knife whilst slowly rotating the engine via the crank bolt.
Remove the outer half of the old belt by cutting it across, leaving a half-belt in place.
Slide the new belt half way onto the pulleys before cutting the remaining half of the old belt off.
Then slide the new belt the rest of the way onto the pulleys, before adjusting the tension.

Hey presto, new belt fitted and correctly timed without grief.
 
You will need a read off torque wrench, this type will show you the applied torque as your holding it.

You don't need these locking tools, screwdrivers and bolts with the middle drilled out and a drill in the middle will work just as well.
