Hi, I normaly do most of my mechanicing my self, but i just got a 300tdi and am not sure when it last had a cambelt.

Is it a horrible nasty job with lots of special tools?

any advice on this would be gratly reccived

its on 127000 miles so i wouuld hope its had one change!
 
Just for once, the Haynes manual describes it quite well. It even tells you how to make the required tools. (timing tools and crank locking tool.)

Allow yourself plenty of time and check the water pump gasket for seepage while your in that area.

Handy tip to undo nut on end of crankshaft Get a 27mm socket and agood breaker bar Put socket on from underneath, move clockwise until tight against chassis. Go inside turn starter. This will spin bolt off then follow hynes guide. AT 127k put a kit on as opposed to just a belt. Good luck and allow a full day to do the job b.b
 
You have to take the water pump off in the proces so you will need a new gasket.

Bonny, I was recomended not to use this method to undo the bolt.
 
James ----- was it the same dipstick told you you need to take the water pump off Its nowhere near the timing gear on a 300 tdi. Also a special spanner is not needed when temoving viscous fan first renove 4 10 mm bolts on pulley then a normal open spanner will fit. b.b
 
I agree with the fan bit, I just used a normal spanner straight onto the fan.

The water pump bit, I have a 200tdi and got carried away.

And the starter motor bit, can't remember what was said about it, have you done this method yourself? Did it work ok and how did you manage to get it torqued back up after you finished the job?
 
Have used it on 200 /300tdi in both Def and Discoverys. Manual gearbox easy put in low range 1 gear apply hand brake and tighten to 80 Nm then further 90 deg. Auto get helper to put screwdriver through wading drain hole on to gap in starting ring teeth Hold in tightly and proceed. b.b
 
No, it's a tool that connects between the torque wrench and the socket, and by means of gearing doubles the torque of the torque wrench. So by setting the torque wrench to 100foot pounds the torque converter will tighten to 200foot pounds.
 
Well thats the job all done now, the belt was rather threded so i put on the kit!, i have a Very Very big pile of recipts etc with the it non of which mention a cambelt so there is a scary chance that this its first change at 127000 miles!, thank god
