Hi all I'm struggling to find which timing belt kit I need to order, my problem is that on the Website it states
Defender 300TDI from VA117354 (1994 on)
Or
Defender 300TDI to VA117353
(1986 to 1994)

Now looking at my owners manual I can't find any reference to the above mentioned codes. I have the vin, engine no and veh desc.

With it being a 94 I want to get this right so if someone can point me in the right direction it would be appreciated.

Many thanks Jamie

Mine is 94. I've just purchased the kit with the modified crank pulley etc. in case it has not been done before. I'd rather have a spare part when the job is done, than have to wait, mid job.

PS.

Just re-read your post - the TO 94 kit will be the 200tdi one.

But, as per my post above, unless you're sure yours has been done, best to get the 300kit with the extra parts included. I can look up the part number for you later this morning.

Cross over from the 200 to the 300 was mid 94. There were no 300s in 86.

I don't know if the 200 uses the same kit, but the data you have is misleading.

That's paddocks for you,

That would be great, could you recommend where to buy the kit also? Thanks

As far as i remember, the early way to stop the belt moving was to have a rim on the tensioner (im not 100% sure of this though)

The rim was later moved to the crank pulley - the kit above supplies you with the 'modified' crank pulley. Your motor may, or may not, have this fitted - but you wont know until you have the timing case apart.

I think the kit above is about £5 more than the one without the crank pulley, so, if you want all the parts to hand, just buy that one.

There is one more 'kit' i think that also includes the crank oil seal, but i, personally, did not buy that one.

What you want to be sure of, in all cases, is that one of the pulleys has a rim to it, otherwise the belt moves off center, and cuts its way into the timing cover, before, eventually, jamming, detoothing, etc.

The later kit also changed the tensioner and how it is secured. Old system was a bolt and washer set up that went through the tensioner bearing, the new system the bolt is replaced with a stud in the case and the tensioner is secured with a nut. Easy to change from old to new.

that VA number is the chassis number, or the end bit of your VIN which is 2 letters and 6 numbers.

For example i can fits parts upto HA709090 to my car and my chassis number is HA485033, so as long as your within the number range then it will fit
