wired new noise

When its cold - first start - if I am climbing a hill in 3rd or 4th I get a ticking / knocking - similar to a big end knock - coming from bell housing area. It does not happen in 1st or 2nd and goes after about 10 mins. Revving the engine = no noise. The engine has just been rebuild with new shells, re-ground etc... and because it only happens in 3rd and 4th I am suspecting the transmission.
Any ideas?
Perhaps I should add that once the whole lot is really warmed through - the sound turns to more of a rumble but ís not permanently there.
It all runs smooth and, apart from the cold ticking and hot rumbling, all is quite and vibration free.
Its a 2.25 Petrol - IIa

Noise can travel and appear to come from somewhere it's not, especially when you are driving.

Have you checked the oil levels in your diffs?

Yep - oil levels are all good. Just find it strange that it only happens in top and 3rd. Really don't fancy pulling the lot out again. Just hope its not the engine bearings....

Might be - I will check. I do have FWH but leave them mostly engaged while pottering around locally - to keep oil circulation. Switch them to 2x4 on long runs.
But seems strange that its only in 3rd and 4rd - unless it speed related. Oh and it only happens when under power / accelerating. Might just be one of those things but I don't want to shag the crank if it is the bearings. but again I would expect big end noises to be permanently there when applying power.
Will check the prop later.
Cheers

I get similar noises and hope it is nothing serious. My theory is gearbox bearings or layshaft problem.

Hmmmm...I had what sounds very similar, hard to pinpoint and like yours 3rd and 4th pulling up hill. Gradually got worse.

Pulled the gearbox to do the clutch and after removing inspection plates saw 3 teeth missing in a row on the intermediate gear.

Why it was only evident in 3rd and 4th I have no idea.

BlueBeasty you worry me. My noises only became apparent after I had an engine problem when a hotspot dropped and locked the engine suddenly. I now think it could have done damage in the gearbox. I will have to hope it lasts till after winter. My luck is that it will give up in sub zero conditions.

I worry a lot of people :D

If you take the inspection plate off you can see the intermediate gear.....might set your mind at ease anyway....

Then again it might not

Up to my neck in other things on the old house getting all sorted for winter. Will try and find time for a peak in the box.
