My engine has started to tick when under acceleration and whistle for a short amount of time? Is this serious? Any help would be appreciated.

First reply will be your answer, cylinder number 1 or 5, was always 5 on mine.
Google td5 warped manifold.

Took it to a garage and have been told that the gasket is leaking at the front, does this need to be sorted urgently?

The gasket is leaking because the manifold has warped which has physically pulled the studs out of the head, yes it needs sorting as its will only get worse.
Nip the nuts up on the effect cylinder and see how long it is before it gets noisy again, might make a week if you are lucky.
Not a hard job, but you will need the manifold skimming and well worth doing the mods to stop it happening again.

Exactly what happened to mine !

You will need to take the manifold off cut the webs out and then skim it.
Make sure the webs are cut first because they can move again if you do it the other way round.
I'm just doing another one now, where are you?

I'm in Gloucestershire, I don't have the tools to do this or the knowledge, what sort of price am I looking at the get it done?

I wouldn't like to guess how much. If the studs have snapped that will push the price up. It's ok to drive it for a bit if you need some breathing space, just means the mpg will drop and poss feel a little less power.
I ran my td5 disco with cylinder 1 and 5 without studs because it warped really badly. It used to scream like a banshee on acceleration.
