so i jumped in the 90 this morning, the one the i recently rebuilt if anybody has seen my thread on it, anyway, the engine started to make a strange ticking noise on top of the normal engine noise.
i had a look under the bonnet, everything looked fine, i had a similar noise a few years ago and it was a fuelling issue so i changed the fuel filter and cleaned the filter in the lift pump and stated to drive again, but it continued to tick away and then something went bang ;(

now iv got quite a loud banging going on while the engine is running, it sounds like it coming from the bottom end, and its louder on the near side,
No leaks of any sort
No obvious damage
Engine starts and runs first time, but it bangs like mad

anybody got any ideas before i strip it down, I'm thinking something has snapped down the bottom end?

its at my work atm which is 250miles away from my home so iv got limited tools but I'm going to take the rocker cover off tomorrow and check under there and i might be able to pull the sump off too for a look.

bit of a stab in the dark but anybody got any ideas?? big end?

its a 300tdi

Exhaust manifold leaking at cylinder head? Failed big ends is a hammering / clattering sound in my experience but not experienced it in a landy.

A leak at an injector can produce a loud knock too. Hope its not a big end. If you record the sound and post it here it will help diagnosis

Check that a valve stem has not lost a cap,if tappets well out of adjustment they can escape or sometimes they snap in two.
A valve then does not open and results in a lot of noise. Previous ticking is a clue.

Mine started making like a loud popping/chugging sound from the air box. As stated earlier, it was a valve stem cap that had come off and the rocker arm had a huge amount of free movement. I replaced the cap, set the rocker to the right adjustment and no noise after that.

Thanks for the suggestions lads, I haven't had a chance to have a look at her yet, Iv been too busy with work and I'm going away with work for a week on Saturday so might not get a chance to check her out until I come back at the start of Feb.

I have videoed the noise, it doesn't do it justice at all, but you can hear the knock, I'll see if I can figure out how to upload it.

the knock doesn't sound that bad in the video but its actually very loud, i don't really want to run it again incase it gets worse.

lets see if the video link works then...

Mine did that on my old disco and it was the rocker shaft. The threads give way or get over tightened and the rocker shaft pops up. Might not be that in your case but I'd start at the easy top end first.

Iv been away with work for a while but I finally had a chance to look at her today,

turns out Iv snapped a push rod, the one closest to the bulkhead. I don't think it's caused any other damage, it's only a few quid for a new one so going to replace it tomorrow and hopefully that will sort it out.
