This may be a stupid question but........

Hi all. As the title suggests this could be a stupid question. When I got my Freelander attached to the keys were 2 alarm fobs. Both alarm and disarm the car and I'm just wondering if I need both of them on the set of keys all the time? I'm also wondering if this could be something to do with why it won't start.

The car came with 2 keys and 2 rectangular fobs when new.
There should be 1 key and 1 fob together, supplied as 2 separate sets.

That oval fob isn't anything that LR supplied with the car, so it's either from another car, or someone has added something non-standard

The fob is also the immobiliser (going by your profile pic). When you say the car won't start is there a led that gets lit on the dash between the speedo and rev counter? It should flash when the alarm is on and go off and stay off once disarmed. If it comes on solid, then its immobilised.

Hi. Thanks for your replies. I've separated the keys and fobs now. Had a play about with them earlier and both arm and disarm the car. I'll stick with the black fob as that seems to be an original. I'm assuming a previous owner got the 2nd one as a spare or something. Looked at the led light @GrumpyGel and it does flash when armed and goes off when disarmed. Hopefully it will be dry enough this weekend so I can attempt to fit the new starter motor.

The car won't start, if 2 of the same key are on the same ring. But you will get a chiming sound from the CCU under the dash, telling you that something is wrong.

The starter fault could be as simple as a dirty connection (no click), which isn't uncommon. Also the solenoid contactor set wears out, giving non-starting (with a click). Both of these are assuming only 1 key is near the ignition lock.
