thinking of painting my plastics

Im thinking of painting my handle,mirrors and bumpers
was gona start simple to get the feel first and do the mirrors today but just wanted to check the procedure of painting bear plastic
1 "rough up" the texture with 800grit
2 spray with a high build plastic primer
3 smooth off with wet and dry
4 paint with colour as normal body panel
5 clear coat

ive read on other forums that I need a addetion promoter is that the u.s saying for plastic primer?

Yes, primer is slightly elastic i think, don't forget 'panel wipe', a degraeser. Doubt you will get an adhesion promoter in Halfords?
Also some tack rags to remove dust particles and spray it well off the floor, which i would damp down to avoid kicking up dust.

800 grit minimum finish on primer, light coat first, 2 more coats 10 minute intervals, then Laquer, 2 coats again. Try and get a good wet coat at end without runs.

P.s. I would rough up with 320-400 max, after primer 800. If plastic TOO smooth it may flake off.

Whats best? paint the full mirror including base or just paint upto folding point like factory?

Im between coats now! 3 coats of filler so leaving it a few hours but the plastic filler primer is yellow! After ive flatend it do I use regular gray primer over that? or do I go straight to colour?

Lol must av missed that episode
just trying to freshen it up abit without it looking tampered with
if the mirrors come out ok was gona get you to do my bumpers im not gona try a big area like that with rattle cans

yeah no probs pal. like you mirrors you can get away with it but i wouldnt try on bumpers. You can prime with the cans and even colour it but you need the 2pac clearcoat on them or it will look **** and wont last

All done and im quite happy with them
only thing I would have done differant is if the painted part seperates from the none painted would have made the job alot easyer

Painting my mirrors as we speak nice and grey not naff black plastic ...funny thing but iam sure the Westminster had coloured coded mirrors not plain black ...still strange things happen with range rovers ...

Might have had one knocked off at some point and its cheeper to replace both with black than one colour coded

From the picture it does not appear to match the paint work of the car???????????? or is it not supposed to match????

Plastic components will NEVER match completely, manufacturers still have issues, something to do with light particles reacting/absorbing differently.

Well is can see the green tint on the mirror, and car looks a shade of gray

And pics of RR, newer one the mirrors match pretty damn close, and for the kind of money they get for them, they better match damn close

Don't think its grey, ?? im sure Gfrom used the correct colour, even i can see its correct and im fooking hundred of miles away

I found my enjoyment of LZ was greatly enhanced after discovering the "ignore list" feature.

Occasionally, someone who is not on my ignore list quotes someone who is, giving me sight of a previously hidden comment, and providing a reassuring feeling that my filters are indeed saving me from having to read a significant amount of innane drivvel on the forum.

Paint job looks good to me
