A man i know has a range rover v8 2door manual 1984, it is cream colour and interior-mechanics are in very good condtion with no rot anywhere. it has done 154000 miles with a book on how many miles each tank of fuel has done from 1989 and each time it was serviced! i was wondering how much it is worth as i can not find any for sale and im thinking of buying it! cheers

an 84 rangie will fetch anywhere from £200 to £2000 depending on condition, it sounds like a good one but check it out first, you i would go in with a low offer and see what he says, 154,000 miles is alot unless the engine has had an overhaul as cams tend to last about 150k on the v8 due to poor design (listen for a loud tocking sound in time with the engine) also check the door locks work ok as they are not cheap to replace if they go wrong

its also got original roof rack with varnished wodden slats and the oowners manual, i think he is looking for roughly 500 but whats the worst that can go wrong??

yeah chassis is waxoyled and clean, needs a good wash and hoover. if i were to buy it i may get my money back on it if its not for me then?! im in kent

rust on the sills, and the body mounts, check if the rear tailgate opens and shuts as it should it will have a steel top tailgate if its the original these rust like its a competition, front shock towers rust and become dislodged, check around the seatbelt anchor points as rot here will fail an mot, also check the carbs don't leak fuel when the engine is turned off, the floats become stuck and cause fuel to **** out of the carbs

Doesn't matter!
Rip his arm off right now! iI'll buy it off you if you don't like it but I know you will. Here in Ireland that car would only be about €50 a year to tax compared to my €2,000 on a 95 3.9. A person who keeps records like that is going to have been just as fastidious about general maintenance. As said above the mileage is high and even a well maintained one will more likely need a cam and chain but I'd say buy it.

Check rear crossmember where body bolts to chassis, sills, front inner wings. Also check the front swivels (the big chrome ball at the front wheels) as they pit & rust causing the seals to fail.
Does sound promising though & well worth £500 even if it's tatty but sound.

BUY IT!
Worry about anything else later!
£500 is scrap value! you CANT go wrong at that money!
Lots of pottential areas to look at, and of the breed, mid eighties motas are a bit of a PITA when it comes to spares, as they made a lot of changes in a short period and lots of bits were deleted from the parts catalogues; but a two door should share most parts with the earlier models, which now being 'desirable' classics are better supported than external hinge four doors; NOT that this one sounds like it should NEED much attension!
And, its no different to any other 'classic' car really, its just that we've enjoyed a long period with Rangies being dirt cheap and second hand spares plentiful....
As said tho, at that mileage, probably coming up for an engine over-haul.
I did my 84 auto a few years back, and keeping it 'original' was a twelve week project, completely tearing the engine to the bare block, and LOTS of cleaning to get rid of the 'black-death' carbon deposits in the cam-gallery and avery where else, before reboring, and rebuilding with new cam, new tapets, new timing chain and gears, heads skimmed, valves and seats ground, new rockers, rocker shafts etc etc etc etc , down to the hoses to plumb it all back in at the end... a tad over £700 worth all in, and Worth every penny! Really 'crisp' and very powerful.
Daunting, when the car, like yours only cost £500, but soooooo nice!

Jimmyh, just pm me the guys details and tell him zzr's on his way with the money, you don't want to be bothered with an old V8 Rangey just to much agg...

That first one was very nice. Second one had me laughing for quite some time. Surprised the chancer aint tried his "luck" on here with that one as we've had one or two optimists lately.
