Aside from the ongoing project that is P38 ownership, I am considering buying an old proper Landie as a project next year for me and the bratling.

Now having been browsing on fleabay, it seems there are plenty potential Series knocking around but seem to be getting their prices bumped up by virtue of their number plates. (Quite why I don't know, or do people not realise a car has to be roadworthy to get the plate off these days?) Whatever it is needs to be SWB, would prefer a defender really I think. Sensibly speaking how much should I be looking to spend to buy one that isn't terminal? I.E reasonably solid chassis and bulkhead?

So In a nutshell, How much and which one for best value? Are the V8s cheaper than Dismals? I just can't work it out they vary so much.

If I say between 500 and a grand for the car what would that get me? (Apart from the obvious pile of rust/oil leaks)

Well prices are going up now due to the time of year.
Just keep an eye out in hte for sale section as there are a few in at the moment or wait till spring.

If you buy a 'fender for £1k you had better be good with a welder.

22 years of working on crumbly British things for a living means that was bit of a necessity. :D Yeah I'm good with a welder.

It will be next year before I buy something. So am I going to get a better series for the money then?

There will be the right one for you out there somewhere, you've got even more choice coz your prepared to rebuild it from the start,
Spend a bit of time scanning the market, go and have a look at a few to see wot you get for your money(not a lot usally)

The idea is a full strip down and rebuild. I quite like the idea of these hybrid things on a rangie chassis, so presumably a Disco chassis would go under one of the variants?
And don't even get me started on Rivets, I'm a member of the Shackleton Preservation Trust helping keep good old WR963 in one piece.
What I want to try and avoid is buying something that has a terminal chassis. Welding outriggers and crossmembers in is neither here nor there, as is making those parts up once it's stripped. Althought the bulk of the assembly and dissasembly will be done on the drive I have a 5metre square workshop at the bottom of the garden so pretty much everything can be rebuilt indoors then carried outside for assembly. (It would have been a garage but can't get a car down the side of the house :( )

It will also get you a 1964 SWB Series 2a with a full MOT in reasonable working order - and you'll get some change from that! Rust will be relatively minor too.

(well that's what it got me 4 years ago)

You would be very lucky to get that now.
