yesterday I decided after all the tricky jobs I have carried out I would do the nice simple one and change the oil, so drained the old stuff removed the filter and changed then re-filled with new oil.
That all went well.
However on my drive in this morning it didn't quiet sound right almost like a blowing from the engine, with a slight loss of power.
Nursed it into work and when stationary I could hear a rattle from the top of the engine and there is oil around and under the first injector.

Only thing I can think that I did not do after the change was re-check the oil level but I had put in over 5.5ltrs so shouldn't be drastically low.

So what have I done? I'm hoping I've just done something daft and not completely buggered the engine as it's now my only car!!!

Will go check all of the above cap seemed fine when I first got to work and stuck my head under.
The filter would be my guess old one was a real pain in the arse to remove, new one seemed to go on fine but I will re-check it at lunchtime if I can be cheeky and use a ramp

If your oil filter is so loose it is rattling, there will be a huge pool of oil on the road! :)
And you don't need a ramp to check an oil filter, open the bonnet and reach down, you can put your hand on it. Or crawl under.

Big sighs of relief!! Just been down to have a better look over the engine to check for any obvious problems and I found the offending part. Bloody down pipe had come loose!!
Well that explains the blowing noise and the rattle I'm thinking most if not all the oil could have been a sloppy pourer as there is none under the car. I will get the pipe back on and give it a run later.

I really thought I had done some damage this morning!!

Thanks for the helpful replies always appreciated

Look further down the downpipe and there should be a bracket to bolt it to the engine block

Just checking but 5.5 lts doesn't sound a lot to me. My td5 takes somewhere in the region of 7
