But you seemed so sure. What will it be next, perhaps a cross threaded Dust Cap or maybe a split wiper blade causing it to overheat. Who knows ?
logic denotes.
its now been ruled out by the op, but not by professional test.

like to know your logic on how a x threaded dust cap or split wiper blade would cause it!

as you say, who knows?

What was your logic behind it being the helicoils as it is suffering from the same symptoms from before the head was helicoiled. I'm just curious as to how much of this guys time you want to waste?. You've offered no logic, merely posting names of engine components.

bent head due to overheating?
head removed tested and skimmed ok
head then drilled and helicoiled?

process of elimination really. confirm thats ok, then move onto next likely cause. removing bolts to feel for gasses aint expensive, dont take long and has proved inconclusive.

its not my motor, merely stating what i would do, having been asked in a public forum. end of the day, its up to him how much time or money he wastes.

what would your course of action be and how would you do it?

I would be stripping that bad boy down again and I would be checking that block out as if my life depended on it.

unfortunately got all signs of head / gasket.

my course of action now would be to remove head and have a closer inspection of the cylinder liners, possibly get head pressure tested again at a different place.

decide then as to where to go next.

aint that the same thing?

Yep, exactly the same !

ok ive tried this and there is no sign of any vapour ,
runs ok with no cap on exp tank.
as soon as u screw down cap , the pressure builds and within seconds its steamin . no signs of any sort of leakage anywer round head gasket.
may be of interest ,

Stick a rubber glove over the header tank neck, if gas is getting in, it will blow up.

wen warm even tho thres prob less 8 litres coolant in , the tank stays full until u massage pipes then it emptys like some blockage or air lock happens with stat in or out ( open /closed )

The pipes are emptying because gas is gettng in and displacing the water. There must be a crack somewhere, if it were mine, apart from tearing my hair out i would strip it again and take it to another shop for thorough testing.

i really wana sort problems and keep me motor , but im a single parent struggling to get by i just aint got the price of another test / HG to gamble with , i already spent over £200 last week on head and associated bits n bobs .
i been lead to beleive the previuos owner had spent ova a grand at garages trying to diagnose problem , i found the stat had been permanantly bent open ,
i no its another gamble but i think id rather spend my money on replacememt engine than risk re doing head for it to fail again .
my only income is through pest control - rabbits etc and dealing in game but without my disco im snookered .PS i have no hair left !

cut the losses and put another lump in it.
get one with some sort of warrenty, or from a known donr vehicle.

dids, how would you check the block / liners?
i've only done this visually, is there a dye test that can be done?

(just in case mm want to strip it again)

All you can do is a visual check. A penetrative dye test will aid the visual check by highlighting any cracks in the block and as the op said in an earlier post he didn't check the block before refitting the head.

would flourescene in the coolant galleries and a uv light down the bores work?
expect you'd have to get the block warm as well?

It would or you could just spray it on the block the conventional way. Whether the block is warm or not the crack will be there.

Thanks for explaining the situation, i know how costs can add up. If considering another lump, is the rest of the vehicle sorted? if not, is it worth looking at another vehicle, they seem to pop up for not much more than an engine sometimes, plus you will have endless spare donor parts???

Just a thought.

If you do get a lump, howsabout passing the faulty one on to someone for heavy duty stripping/diagnosing 'cos i'm intrigued as to what the hell is wrong with it.;)

nearly suggested this, as its been said it will only do up to next mot cos of welding required.
reckon it would be the most cost effective way to go.

as for the existing problem, i'm intrigued too.
you offerin' to strip it?

just for mm, if you werent so far away from me, i'd have come to help!

rite guys ive been trying to decide wot to do for the best , after time and money spent i want to try and keep mine going ,ive looked at wots for sale in my area (discos and defenders) but nothing good within my price range of about £2000.
also been looking at possible donor vehicles locally and the only thing ive found is a n reg 300tdi with a bit of mot but its £700 quid .
i can get mine thru mots if i want , just have to av sills done , im need a interior as well really and other things .
cnt decide wot to do ???
