Things I've learnt today,

1,

Checking Redex in a 125k 300tdi engine can cause all sorts of false problems,

2,

My chosen Garage is great, they took the engine apart to show me that it was fine and put my mind at ease,

3,

Garages refuse to do anything with gearboxes apart from take them out, send them off and refit

Point 3 They probably made enough charging you to look inside your engine, any garage that needs to dismantle an engine to show you it's ok is charging you for work that doesn't need doing

It helps that he's a friend of the family I admit,

Although I forgot to mention I now owe him a favour,

If its anything like the last 1 he claimed, its just lending him my 90 to tow his trailer with odd 'n ends in to the tip

When you say took the engine apart what do you mean, took the plastic cover off the top or showed you how shiny the tops of the pistons were

Tbh it really doesn't matter how far down he went, as long as you had a mechanic that you trust and it's put your mind at rest then that's enough IMHO.
