Help please on identifying a wire.
I am in my 2nd year of rebuilding a 200tdi 90 and have a spare wire :(
I have a thickish Brown (with Red tracer) coming out of the loom about 3 inch from where the loom comes through the bulkhead into the engine bay. It has a eye termination on the end of the wire and is about 10 inches long.
I have traced it wire back to behind the dash binnicale but loose where it goes. Will try again later when i can remove more of the dash panels.
I have tried to take a photo but its too dark on my phone so will try again when i get home.
Does anyone know where this terminates within the engine bay please?

The only wires I had in the engine bay that had eyes were some grounds and also the wire for the glow plugs.

I can check when I get home, but I don't remember any "live" wires with eyes.

I've almost finished rebuilding my 200tdi - am just finishing off last bits of wiring in the dash and behind the speedo (which has included fitting an alarm) .

I do have a few unconnected or partially connected plugs in the engine bay, so perhaps we can swap notes!

Thanks for the quick reply - I took about 300 photos of the strip down but cant find any that show this cable.
I was assuming that because it was mainly Brown it was live??

Yea...that's what the colour suggests - the only brown wire i've seen with eyes is the one that goes to the battery.....

Unless there's one at the back of the starter? I'm pretty sure there isn't - I think it was just the big thick red wire plus a thin white wire from the ignition

Looking at those charts I'd be inclined to follow the wire under the assumption that it might not be factory fitted.

No workshop manual just the Haynes one. which is 1986-1991 or 1991-1994. mine is a genuine defender 200tdi @ 1991 so could be an overlapping.

So, i'm wondering if it fits to the glow plug post.
This is also the same stud that the Yellow/Black (If i remember correctly) wire fits to from the Glow Plug Heater Relay (PRC6913)?

If you already have a wire from the relay to the plugs I doubt you need another wire going to the plugs. My guess is its on the ignition side, perhaps for the lamp on the dash?. You really need to find a wiring diagram.

Seems most likely to be the glow plug supply - the colour and length support that. If you could post a picky of your current connections to the glow plug control unit it will help. You probably have a bit of pre TDi and TDi wiring - my 1990 200TDi did. Of course, if you put a meter on it and you are getting 12v when the key is turned to the glow position it will prove it too. A good TDi doesn't need the glow plugs anyway - it will start on compression alone.

Thanks for all the input - apparently its a wire, pre existing from the 2.5 n/a & TD era that went to Glow Plug 4 from the ignition to hold on to warm up. but mine has the Glow Plug Heater Relay (PRC6913). So infact Nobber you were spot on with your findings of "brown/red is glow plug/ignition circuit." and Zeaphod correct about the mix of looms from cross over models. So thanks everyone!

As has been confirmed it is a glow plug feed - the other end of it is behind the dash with a 10mm spade on it that goes into a relay on mine, however, it should be connected up via the ignition switch to operate on the glow plug stage you held it in on the 2.5NA-TD's - mine was a petrol originally so I fitted a relay back there.
