The 2.5 TDs do tend to 'breathe heavily' as they age.
How much oil? A coating on the element or a puddle in the bottom of the housing?

take the oil filler cap off while the engine is running. Does it smoke?
If yes then suspect blocked breathers, or worn/broken piston rings.
