I did a search and couldnt find anything useful. What with the floods coming up north (allegedly) i thought id get my finger out and properly fit my wading kit and snorkel. I took the snorkel off to paint my landy but it was never fitted properly in the first place anyway. What is the best way to waterproof the whole system? Ive got a shiny new donaldson air filter so im confident that no waters getting inside there but ive still to buy new ducting etc... and no idea what to use for sealant.

As for fitting my wading kit which consists of breathers and wading plugs thats pretty straight forward but whats the best way to get the pipes up to the same level as the snorkel? Ideally id like to hide them inside it as opposed to cable tied to the outside.

Thanks in advance

Most people use tiger seal or sikaflex sealant to seal the joints in the air intake system.
The best way to get your breathers up to the top of the snorkel is to use a manifold - so that all the breathers join at the same place (engine bay) and a single pipe is run up the outside of the snorkel and the end of the pipe is inserted in to the top of the snorkel.

I have the manifold to join them all into one. How could i get them inside the snorkel though if the snorkel will be sealed into the air intake system? Is it simpler than i think and im being a mong lol just wondering as the only way i can think is poking a hole through the ducting, feeding the breather in then using silicon around the edges.

Also is there an easy way to test that its actually waterproofed sufficiently? Id rather not find out the hard way that ive made a **** job of it :rolleyes:

I agree with Daz on the tigerseal- it's great stuff for snorkels.

You could always run the breathers up to the top of the roof but inside the vehicle if you don't want them up the outside of the snorkel.

With regard to checking it's sealed, the usual method seems to be removing the snorkel top and place your hand over the top with the engine running. You will soon hear if there are any leaks and assuming it's all airtight, then the engine will stall.

Cheers for replies. No idea why i didnt think of just keeping the breather inside and doing it that way lol

AS long as you dont mind the smell of EP90 and the headaches that come with... breathers should always be outside the vehicle...

Ah wise words, headaches are bad enough without being accompanied by the smell of EP90.

Just out of curiosity how do the electrics cope with being underwater? Its an 87 plate 90 with a Disco 200tdi in

There are no electrics, not of any concern anyway...

NEVER run vents in the wagon. Even thou you are 10' from the source I would not be surprised if you get the odd bit of oil mist coming out of the vents. What style snorkel you got ??

POORLY! water in loom is a fire risk (for quite some time after wading!) water on contacts in plugs / fuses rots the copper + bridges connections leading to random (seemingly unrelated) electrical issues + can also cause fires.

get the dow corning stuff from this thread;

+apply to as many electrical connectors as you can get to!

Just run the single pipe from the manifold up the back of the snorkel attaching it to the tie points for the snorkel, I've got a full system in mine, went through water up to the top of the engine and got stuck in the run sat there for 10 minutes whilst being winched out, no problems as I sealed everything first :)
