Get them to check diagnostic connector for corrosion and also ask what kit th!ey are using

Turned out to be bent pins in the plug. But thanks to your combined imput, the fitter now thinks I know a lot more than I do, which might have it's advantages down the road.

LZ has advantage of combined Knowledge

Doesn't give you a lot of confidence in the fitter (garage). he should have found that out straight away. Lack of communication with any ECU using TestBook (and any other diagnostic machine) can be caused by:
a) Low Battery
b) Corrosion of pins in the diagnostic connector, most lost their covers ages ago and can have mud etc on them.
c) In the door frame (A pillar) on both sides of the car there are white connectors that can and do corrode badly, especially the passenger side when you want to communicate with the EAS. Best solution, not easy but doable is to wire out these connector blocks. Do one wire at a time so you don't get them muddled.
d) Some num-head that can't operate or understand how T4 TestBook works.
