The most reliable component in my Landie stable has finally broken!

Yes it is true, previously we've had LRs but for the last 10 years of Disco & laterly Freelander ownership the most reliable and dependable component has been our "backup" 92' Toyota Starlet.

It has never let us down, never gone wrong, started on the button and always been there when the LRs have been 'sick'. For the last 2 years our daughter has been doing a 50km round trip to uni in it each day and its KMs are mounting to a level a little old 1.3 shouldn't really expect to get to.

But yesterday I got in it to shift it on the drive and the fecker wouldn't start. Battery's completely shot. Fecking useless those Toyotas.

Ha Ha ....and breathe .........
A little TLC and a new battery and i'm sure she'll be up an running in no time ..nothing lasts forever ...without a little love and attention.

trust wimmin to break a car eh.....

my son loves old slitties for there endurance, but has now found love in an old fiesta
one of his previous unbreakable cars was a Lada samara
I took it down an unmade road that was so bad, transits were having trouble, but the lada just left in 1st gear crawled its way over the mountainous bumps and holes no problem, but would also do nigh on 100 mph with ease
(on a private road hehe)
anyone would think the Ladas were made for terrible roads

on a personal note, mentioned elsewhere, I used to drive minicabs.
biggest highmilers were fords of course.
180.000`ish miles in a mk1 sierra 1600-a bit basic but earned £££`s
nigh on 300.000 miles in a 1800 CVH engined auto mk2 sierra - that just ran, and ran, and ran....
then on to my first MK1 diesel mondao - had the injection pump renewed at 100.000 as it "got noisey"..... then not long after that my dearest daughter wrote it off...
replaced that one with a cheap petrol one but gave up the cabbing as I was only doing it just weekends.

but in all my working cars, hands down it was a merican built 1800CVH and 4speed auto plus overdrive (torque converter lock up @ 50mph) that won hands down... never ever had the cam cover off in ownership, replaced the timing belt once, rear diffs 3 times -1st my fault, 2nd was from a stock car to get me out of trouble- 3rd was the one done miles, oh, and a steering rack that was my fault-reversing up a huge kerb on lock bent it

Yep, new battery and she's up and running again. I've replaced the starter motor, a wheel bearing and clutch slave cylinder in the 10 years. Other than that its just maintenance - timing belt, tyres, brake pads/shoes - I've even been giving it a service each year before Frankie starts a new year at uni of late

My brother had a Lada Niva once - he hit a bump one day and the chassis snapped in half! Not sure how big the 'bump' was though

of course I should have included service items
changed the engine oil every 5000 miles - worked out about 4 week intervals,
but as on all my cabs, I had a regime of -5000 change oil, 10000 change oil & filters.
done an engine flush most times with new hydrulic oil-cleans out the hydrulic cam followers on the cvh.. front disc brakes were checked at each oil change, but done many miles before changing...
neighbours said I was always under my cab - err yes, it dose miles said I
the gearbox was bullet proof, and never required much topping up
except when it was taken out of service as the mrs car (wimmin .) and the then £12 vacuum kickdown switch failed causing it to draw ATF up the small vacuum pipe to the inlet manifold at tickover, but not till after I put about a gallon of fresh into the box...
she told me it was smoking in trafic - never believed her - dohhhh
was sad to see it go, put it up for sale outside my then home,
was sold to another minicab driver for his wife in half an hour of having the for sale put in the window = just about everyone new it & its reliability....
oh well, you cant keep them forever,
the mrs got a BMW 325i mtech modified as replacement,
would`nt been seen in a ford after that.........lol
