best way of getting access to the top bolts on bellhousing is to remove engine mountings and drop engine down - they are 15mm headed bolts on a 300 installation

Thanks BMP42 for you help,i have completely removed mounts and lower engine until the timing casing rests on the steeringbox.Yes it has slightly improved access to the nuts but they are so tight. The ones i have managed to removed required multiple extension barr and then a rigid bar with 2' pole to crack the nuts. With the uppermost last three its very difficult to get purchase on them due to confined space.Waiting for new 6 sided impact socket set which will give me 3no 12 " extension bars and 2 ujs.
Due to it being a landrover 15 years old and its very first replacement clutch things are very tight so the more access the better.
Thanks for all your advice, will keep you informed with my knuckle busting.

I found I had to keep adding extension bars, until I could get a breaker bar on the end just to crack them-Also found getting them back on even worse-best of luck

If there really tight hit them with a hammer it seams to free up the thread! if its a bolt hit it square on it head. if its a nut get a large punch and tap the flat faces!

failing that try heat?

When I did my Disco 300Tdi, procedure was totally remove engine mounts, and lower engine pretty well as far as it can go. Then the lad that was helping me put two 12" extensions on a bar, and fed it along the top of the box from under the car. I reached in from the top, and when the engine is dropped like this, I was able to make sure the socket was snug on the bolts. As far as I can remember, they were all the same size head. I would imagine that this is bloody difficult to do on your own, but if you can get someone to hold the socket in place like this, it will be much easier.

Good Luck!

Thanks for all your advice.

I have just received my new socket set,not bad, bought sunday night ,delivered to France wed pm.
When i do get the bloody thing apart im going to do a timing kit, blank the egr valve and when it goes back together a de cat pipe.
Lots to do, luckily i have a massive hanger so i wont get wet, just a bit cold lying under a dirty old landy(could think of better things to be lying under).
If anyone fancies a free week in my gite(sleeps 6) in return for help with disco let me know ,we are only 40 minutes from Roscoff ferry port ,the same distance from Brest airport.

Got the bl dy things apart, its amazing what you can do with a nice new socket set,new clutch in, timing belt kit fitted, a bit of a cow to re marry up to gearbox but its in and bolted up,tommorow i will try and remember what goes where, and hopefully running by the end of the weekend.
Cheers for all your help and hints.

i found a uj between the socket an bar and another on the end of the gearbox as it drops down helps get some purchase on the nuts as theres not much room, give it a tap with a big hammer
works a treat ;)

also ram some blue tak into the uj's to stop them slopping about ;)
